Before opening the franchise in Bensalem, Rubin was a network administrator and service manager for a company that sold office equipment. But after being laid off, he found himself looking for something else.
"As I was looking for another job, I came across Computer Troubleshooters, and thought to myself, 'This could be interesting,' " he said.
Bensalem Patch got to talk to Rubin about the company and what it's like to own a Bensalem Business.
How long have you been working with computers? I’ve been troubleshooting computers since I was in elementary school working on my Atari 1200XL, followed by several Commodore 64s, leading right into my first Windows PC (a Packard Bell), followed by my first Microsoft Server—Windows NT. However, I didn’t start working in the IT field until 1999. And yes, I love what I do!
How and when did Computer Troubleshooters start? Computer Troubleshooters was founded in Australia in 1997 and brought to the USA in 1999. Currently, there are more than 450 locations throughout 25 countries. I started Computer Troubleshooters – Bensalem in September 2003, and have been running it ever since. I’ve been living in Bensalem since 1999 and loved the area around me. Fortunately, there were no other CT franchises around me, so I snatched up Bensalem along with a piece of Philadelphia.
What's the biggest challenge of being a Bensalem business? I don’t have any specific challenges because of Bensalem. My biggest challenge has always been trying to find new ways to promote my business and getting new customers.
What's the best thing about being a Bensalem-based business? The location! Because my business is mostly on-site at various locations, I can get on I-95, US1 or hit the turnpike in a matter of minutes. The second best thing is the Township itself. From the Mayor and city council, to the Director of Public Safety, and to everyone else who works for the Township, they do an excellent job. The materials that are readily available to assist business owners is another example of what makes operating a business in Bensalem so great.
As a business owner in Bensalem, I always try to help out my fellow Bensalem businesses whenever I can. With that thought in mind, the Bensalem Business Association is another example of why Bensalem is a truly great place to work. The BBA’s sole purpose is to help Bensalem businesses grow by networking within, as well as businesses outside of the Township that do work in Bensalem. Check out the BBA here.
What is the most common computer issue that you deal with, and what is one suggestion on avoiding that issue? Malware. This causes so many issues...from computers running slow, to freezing up, to error messages, to possible theft of identity, etc. One of the most important things that a person can do, whether it’s a business or residential computer, is to UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE! Adobe, Java, and Microsoft Windows updates are essential in helping your computer from becoming infected. And now the obvious: Make sure that your Antivirus/Anti-spyware software is current and up to date as well.
