Kevin Battista's first visit to the Bloomsdale-Fleetwing section of Bristol Township on Thursday, December 7, 2006 was his last.

The Apricot Lane resident and father of two was shot and killed during a robbery attempt shortly after 2 a.m.

On Monday, Bristol Township police and county prosecutors announced they had filed an arrest warrant on charges of murder, robbery and related offenses for 24-year-old Ckaron Handy. The Philadelphia man is suspected of being the triggerman in the early morning 2006 shooting is already in federal custody related to a Bloomsdale shots fired incident that happened in 2011.

A lack of cooperation from witnesses who saw the crime and several other factors lead to the delay in issuing a warrant for Handy’s arrest in connection with the murder, Bucks County prosecutor Jennifer Schorn said. In an effort to compel some witnesses to speak, the case went to a grand jury.

“I can’t get into specific details, but there is a reason why we were unable to charge [Handy] until now,” Schorn told the media Monday morning.

Handy was known to Bristol officers prior to the 2006 murder and has been in and out of jail since the crime, authorities said.

Battista, who was 30 at the time of his murder, was driving around Bristol township with a 21-year-old neighbor when he thought he saw Danielle Frenier, his girlfriend and the mother of his children, driving past his red Ford F-150 Supercab pickup truck on southbound Route 13. He thought she headed into the Bloomsdale section of the township and began asking residents if they saw her, the criminal complaint stated.

Battista then decided to score some drugs. District Attorney David Heckler said Battista was a “recreational” drug user and not an addict.

Heckler described Battista as "a hard-working union member who made a real bad choice on that evening to go into an area where he had not been before.”

After driving around Bloomsdale, Battista spotted a group of men at the intersection of Mustang and Aieracobra streets and asked for $60 worth of drugs.

Two of the men approached. Handy is then alleged to have pulled a gun and said, “Give me the money,” according the affidavit.

Next, Battista pulled out $60 in cash and held it up. Handy, who was said by witness to be wearing a fur-lined jacket, asked if the Battista was “kidding” and began counting to three. The 30-year-old put his car in drive and slowly took his foot off the brake pedal.

Police said in the affidavit, at that moment, Handy pulled the trigger of his .22 caliber revolver. The 21-year-old passenger described the gun as an “old movie pistol.”

Three shots were fired; one hit Battista in the back, Heckler said. The victim then lost control of his truck and struck several parked cars on Fleetwing Drive.
In the affidavit, witnesses described seeing Battista with his head on the steering wheel horn. Battista, choking on his own blood, then slumped over onto the 21-year-old passenger in the moments after the crash.

Bristol police arrived to find Battista with a slight pulse and began working to save the man’s life as an ambulance unit raced to the scene. By 3:14 a.m., Battista was pronounced dead by doctors at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital.

During an autopsy, a disfigured .22 caliber bullet was discovered in the victim’s body. The coroner’s report said Battista died from a single gunshot wound and ruled the death a homicide.

“He was a fish out of water,” Schorn said of the union machinist’s visit to the trouble neighborhood.

“Individuals were initially reluctant to deal with Mr. Battista and suspected he may have been a narcotic officer,” Heckler said. Battista raised suspicions when he said he had $60 for powdered cocaine and not the neighborhood’s usual drug of sale - crack cocaine.

Prosecutors and police said they talked to several witnesses and expect them to testify at Handy's trial.

Others who are suspected of being involved in the robbery are still be investigated, township detective Tim Fuhrmann said.

Bristol Township Chief of Police James McAndrew said the fact that Handy was willing to shoot someone he believed to be law enforcement officer emphasized how dangerous police work is.

Battista’s murder was one of several violent crimes that occurred in the Bloomsdale neighborhood in 2006 and 2007.

In the early part of 2012, police arrested Michael “Pooh” Brooks, 27, of Willingboro, N.J., and charged him with the murder of 33-year-old Bristol resident Daniel Buchanan, PhillyBurbs.com reports. Brooks and his brother both testified in the Handy grand jury, Heckler confirmed.

The murder of Jimmy Dennis Moore, 19, of Bristol Township, still remains unsolved, the website reports.

Recently, crime in the Bloomsdale section has decreased dramatically, authorities told Patch.

This story does not make much sense.
1 Why would this man's girlfriend be in a drug infested area at this time of the night if she has children? looking for what? What mother if not on drugs is looking in a place as reported as drug infested after 2am. There is no bars or stores in that area why would she be in that section of bristol township?
2. “recreational” drug user and not an addict" are you serious? That is not recreational drug use on a monday night after 2am when he should getting ready for the next day of hard working labor. Who was watching the children?
Who's going to get the children up and fed when both parents are out looking for fun on a Monday night and He is with a 21 year old woman,
3. What is recreational drug use on a monday night and tuesday morning is a work day?
This is a drug user passing off phony money and died for it. He has been in Bloomsdale before, no one just drives through.

Prosecutors said more information regarding the details of why Mr. Battista was in that neighborhood would be released during the trial.

Don't understand why you blame the person who got killed instead of the person who used an illegal gun to kill him.

This is the county looking to charge someone with a crime he did not commit, A young black man, who you the Bucks County prosecutor Jennifer Schorn said. In an effort to compel some witnesses to speak, the case went to a grand jury.
It took her 6 years to compel or trick someone as a witness to such a sad crime. This is bucks county doing what it does best be racist. I am sadden by such lost for his mother I too am a mother and you will not convict my son of something he did not do. His family does deserve justice however you will not use my son to be re-elected. There are so many black youth out here in these streets that can't see what this world is about and they get caught up in these streets and the powers that be will take your lack of knowledge and use it against you. There is years and history of black murders unsolved in this section of the township and no-one has ever cared and no one ever will.

A not so innocent young black man. Did you look up his arrest records on pacourts? Cause this is NO innocent person. He has many many charger from even before this case. It didn't take 6 years to compel or trick someone this man is feared by people because he is a dirty thug who needs to be off the streets.

I agree with you in full Ariana, this recreational drug user as they so nicely worded it did not stumble along Bloomsdale by mistake. If he( the deceased) was such a decent human being he should have been home with his baby momma and his children. Lets back up , Kevin was a single white male, with two loving children, a great employee who did not marry his girlfriend, left the kids God knows where or with whom to score drugs with his junky baby momma for recreational use was the term in a neighborhood that is referenced to openly sell drugs to crack users, crack heads and wet feigns. Bloomsdale is not the greatest neighborhood in America but every section in Lower Bucks County is crime ridden with drug dealers. If I ride through Golden Ridge, Kenwood, Indian Creek, Apple Tree , Red Cedar at the time Kevin the deceased mistakenly entered Bloomsdale for his recreational habit, it would be because I am having withdrawls from my chronic use of a drug known as crack cocaine Kevin was addicted to drugs! Stop trying to sugarcoat his addiction, darn anyone and everyone knew he was a junkie that was no secret to society.

Coming to score drugs in Bloomsdale or Blue Ridge at that time of the night was sucidal from the start but his addiction told him too get high and his baby momma was going through withdrawls also.
I am not saying his murder was justified, don't have a clue to how the murder happened except rumors , newspaper lies, and the television. To Kevin's parents I feel your loss. I have also lost a son to the system Araina, up until recently I almost lost him for a murder charge that was rigged by the local government. Kevin's parents I hope and plead with you that this case is really fully investigated not just pinned on someone because you needed answers and wanted someone brought to justice. You son needed help prior to his death, you choose to close your eyes and ears to his cry for help. Now as you sit at home holding your grandchilden, looking at his baby momma wishing that night would have never happened and the nightmare will end , waiting for Kevin to call you, walk through that door remember this Ckaron Handy is going to prison for something that was not of his doing, is that justifiable? will you sleep better sending the wrong person to prison?

How is Ckaron Handy going to prison for something that was not his doing. He pulled the trigger it was his doing. And I hope he lives a miserable life behind bars. And for your information we did not pressure the investigators for an arrest we stood back and let them do their job. And do not judge my brother you didn't know him or what a great person he was. How you people stick up for a murderer is beyond me. Hope he rots in hell

I am not related to the accused, nor the murder victim I feel for both of you parents. Once our children reach eighteen they are responsible for their own actions. The choices that adults make are their choices not ours. It hurts pulls the life force out of you, losing a son whether by death or prison I see no difference most of the time neither person will ever be seen again or there is so much time between the both of you the bond is gone and you become strangers. I am going to pray for both of your families for healing, strength, and justice. Kevin's family all white's are not racist or bad people, all blacks are not drug dealers and bad people. so lets not walk in that darkness. The issue is a young man was killed and his murderer is still loose. Find Kevin's Killer and bring him to justice. Ckaron has alot of faults but murder is not one of them.

Hold up he thought he seen his baby momma in Bloomsdale as he road by on Green Lane, OMG unless you are looking thru the cameras that nobody monitors , you are unble to see Mustang and Airacobra Street. What 21 year old female friend at 2am in the morning would even let you look for your baby momma at two in the morning. Never mind I answered that earlier a junkie and crackhead, not a recreational user as Dave Heckler described in the article. Dont worry readers I will continue to leave comments so feel free to chime in and attempt to justify this lame excuse of why and how this young man was killed. Was it sucide ? was it self defense? is this just another pin this case on somebody so this family can leave us alone? Kevin's family stay on these investigators, its election time so this case was solved for votes not merit. Free the innocent , return the firing squad for the guilty ! I am going to start a facebook page about this case. so the world can have input maybe a real crime scene investigator can solve this mess . Bucks County this is all for votes not justice.

Oh please let me know the name of the facebook page so I can follow it. I would love to see the stuff you put on there about a man you didn't know yet you can judge him. Here is another ignorant human blaming the person who got killed instead of blaming the person who shot him.

Trash from Philadelphia is seeping upwards, and has already ruined Bristol; not unlike how the rats from Trenton have ruined Morrisville. Time to move - these people have no logic, reasoning, or simple decency - and will fight words with guns

if they don't! I care because this is my family. I believe my son! I will defend my son. I will stand by my son! Bloomsdale didn't fail Kevin the township did its been that way since I was a kid. Kevin has been there before and not to visit a friend! My son is a person he give u the shirt off his back feed u if u were hungry n bring u home if u had no were to go. He has done that on several occasions! I wish ur family peace n blessing don't judge mine unless u were there

If u look at my post I'm repeating what the paper is saying and stated how they r saying things that don't make much sense I have no reason to judge ur brother as a person for I don't kno him. That was not my intention I kno my sons record n believe me, but murder has not been one of them! All I'm saying is. They have the wrong Guy. Ckaron would rather fight with his fist n loose than take someone's life he knows far to well what its like to loose someone! This is hurtful upsetting because I have no intentions of adding to ur pain but I wont join u in that pain I wish I could tell u so many things. From the FBI right down to the discussion I had with them. They don't care about Kevin or ckaron its about money politics and conviction rates and again I believe my son if I
thought. for one second otherwise I would not be a voice for him.

RIP Kevin... I remember you as a partier but mostly as one that could hang and still be responsible enough to get up for work every day and be there for your family and friends. Regardless of whether or not you were in Bloomsdale that night to score some drugs or really find Danielle or your passenger needed a fix... it doesn't really matter now, does it? What matters is that some piece of scum took you from this earth WAY before you should have left... and that SCUMBAG deserves to rot. I can only assume that our officers and DA did their that job and can prove that they have the right man in custody.... so HOPEFULLY he will be prosecuted and Kevin's family can have some sort of closure. My heart goes out to all of them!!!

Kevin, I knew your dad all his life, from a toddler. Don't listen to people, he was a good person, great father and terrific son whom his mother was so proud of. God bless Marie. Justice will be served, and some day maybe they will start executing people on paid TV, and our world will become a safer place to live.

Do you guys no 62,000 people die in the united states everyday..... There is crime in every part of the world. Upper class lower class and everywhere in between. People there are drugs everywhere more in the upper class just not talked about as much. And more open in the lower class. Bucks county is the biggest doping county in the entire state.. Moral of the story is people get shot people die random causes. Instead of wasting time on telling someone they got what they deserved or they should route in jail. Why not go out and make a difference by helping the sick helping someone who needs direction. Everyone knows a child and adult someone who could use a helping head a shoulder to lean on... Fine something constructive to do with your time!!!!
