On Wednesday evening, the 1980s tribute band Rubix Cube performed live in front of a packed audience at the TD Bank Amphitheater on Byberry Road. The event was part of the annual Summer Concert Series, which hosts over a dozen shows per season.

The band, which is well-known in the local area, tours the country performing their covers of famous 1980s hits such as "Billie Jean," "Like a Virgin," and "Jessie's Girl," which were among the songs played tonight. The band also covered "Come on Eileen," "Walking on Sunshine," and "Centerfold." The crowd was particularly enthusiastic about Rubix Kube's version of Nena's 1984 hit song "99 Red Balloons" as the band had members scatter actual red balloons throughout the audience.

"I think this is awesome," said Joe Hough of Northeast Philadelphia. This was Hough's first concert at the Bensalem amphitheatre, but not the first time he's seen Rubix Cube. "I saw them when they played in Philadelphia. They're great. I want them to perform at my wedding!" Hough said enthusiastically. When asked about the five dollars, he said that it was "no big deal" and that it would be more expensive to see them anywhere else.

Bryan Robertson, of Bensalem, has attended one previous concert at the amphitheatre before. "I like 'em better when they're free," Robertson said, "but the five dollars is not a big deal." When asked if he would go more often to the concert series if they were free, Robertson replied that it didn't really make much of a difference.

"Quality entertainment costs money," said Dawn Davis, the manager of community affairs for the township. "And if we could get away with not charging people, we would. But it's the economy. With higher gas prices comes higher band prices; many of these bands have to travel to Bensalem from all over the country. But five dollars is cheaper than a movie, cheaper than a pizza, and the entertainment quality here is very high."

Davis, who took over the position from Dave Fiedler in the past year, truly loves her job and is very enthusiastic about the Summer Concert Series. "Most of my work can be a little mundane, but this [the concert series] is just spectacular. I love meeting all of these interesting people. And the residents embrace it, too. We get a lot of positive feedback on our social networking pages."

"The Summer Concert Series is the mayor's brainchild," said Barbara Barnes, the administrative assistant to Mayor DiGirolamo. "And he's been able to build all of this, and hold all of these concerts, without raising taxes. He's the smartest man I've ever met."

The Bensalem Summer Concert Series is in its 10th year and runs every Wednesday until August 31, with a special Doo Wop show officially closing the series on October 1. Some of the upcoming highlights include a Bon Jovi tribute show on July 20 and a tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival on August 31. For more information, please visit www.tdbaevents.com or call 215-633-3635. Tickets are not sold in advance and sales begin at 6 p.m. on the night of the concert.

From what i understand turnout has been poor due to the charge of 5.00...what a shame that this township can't give something free to their residents!

THIS BAND WAS EXCELLENT! Best one we've had in a long time. Great video, but they sound a lot better in person. Not sure if the person above was there or just judging by this video, but you couldn't be more wrong-- girl was SPECTACULAR! She had so many awesome costumes and could sing all kinds of different voices and super high notes. Most of all, she had the kids in the palm of her hand. We've never seen kids run up to the front like that at any of our shows! She made them very happy during and after the show with pics/autographs. The whole band was just so good. Hope they come back. Fun night! :)

I was there. She can't sing. We were a little disappointed. But the show was great otherwise.

I think the Community Affairs Dept. sorely misses Dave Fiedler who used to manage the hiring of acts at the amphitheatre...they were generally better and the concerts were free.I agree with the other writer Susan, that it is a shame that the Township now charges for these concerts. In an Inquirer article this spring , they had a listing of Municipalities around Pa. and NJ. that had concert venues and Bensalem stood out as the ONE that stood out for charging for ALL their regular season concerts.Since the sponsors pay for the major expense of the fees that the acts charge the Township only has to pick up the tab for setup and cleanup. With Township tax revenues rising yearly...especially from increased revenues fron the Casino , I find it hard to believe that the Township is hard pressed to pick up this expense and felt the need to pass it onto it's residents...PITIFUL !!

Ted, appreciate the kind words. I enjoyed managing the amphitheater and was sad to see my tenure end. Contrary to the township's spin I did not leave voluntarily. I was let go (laid off) in mid-December after 9 years of dedicated service and given a few hours to pack my office and vacate the premises. What hurt more than the lost income was being denied an opportunity to usher the amphitheater through its 10th Anniversary season. Obviously I do harbor resentment toward the township administration. In early November I told the administrative director I was planning to retire at the end of 2011 at age 65, but for some unknown reason it was determined retaining me one additional year did not fit with their finances. I have been silent on this subject, but after six months it's reasonable to set the record straight. This board provides a platform to do so. In interest of full disclosure township did grant me a severance package so credit where credit is due in that context.
Dawn is doing a fine job with the season having taken over on short notice. She is not responsible for charging. That was directed by the administration to be in effect regardless of who would manage the venue. I do agree with Ted's comment that T&P expense is largely underwritten by sponsors. TD Bank alone contributes generously in an amount equal to cover the lion's share of what's presented on stage.
I've moved on into the next phase of my life, but I do miss TDBA!
Thanks again, Dave Fiedler

Dave that was my point. I know that Dawn is not responsible for the charge that was imposed by the township. My point is that under her and Derons guidance , the acts are not as good as the ones that were booked under your watch. I mentioned that to them along with some other residents on the Facebook page run by Deron Miller and he blocked the people from posting any comments on the TD Bank Amphitheatre Facebook page for approx. two months.. he recently re-instated the peoples right to post comments if they meet with his approval but to this day has me TOTALLY blocked so that i may not even see the facebook page under my real name.My other point is that I like you are nearing retirement and in these tough economic times I am absolutley scrutinizing all of my expenditures closely.I moved into this township in 1983 with a tax bill at that time of $2200..It is now over $7000 .We all know the windfall That gambling has brought to our township by being a host community. You know the saying ?..." you get what you pay for "...I find it ironic that the township is getting what they paid for after their decision to send you packing....mediocre acts.....and we taxpayers are now asked to pay for the only real free service that our local government provided for us.As I stated previously , with the sponsors picking up the lion's share of the operational expenses and all the increases in realized taxes received by our local township....WHAT AM I GETTING FOR WHICH I HAVE PAID DEARLY FOR ?

Sorry this had to happen to you, Dave. The thing I hate to see the most, is anyone losing their job.

Dave , the reality of the situation is that it is less important WHAT you know then WHO you know here in Bensalem..it's always been that way here and always will be that way

Ted, It doesn't always have to be that way in the future. If people came out and voted in the local elections and voted the Democrats in, several local election cycles in a row, the clowns now running the township under the mayor-for-life dictator (and his side-kick public safety director) would be gone and so would he. An era of clean and open local government could ensue. Merit hiring instead of crony hiring. Lots of other places have local governments that are not corrupt or incompetent. We could too. All we have to do is vote for it.

I totally agree with Harris. We need to elect individuals into office who will promote REAL HONOR, and INTEGRITY, and LIVE IT!! We need open, honest, and pure government that will serve the citizens of this town, and not Henry VIII and his appointed Sherrif of Nottingham. I am encouraging everyone who reads this to take a stand, go to the council meetings, and ask questions. I also have a strong piece of advice to the Firefighters of this town, and ANY Bensalem police officer brave enough to read this: Don't let Harran and Ponticelli's intimidation tactics put you in fear. REACH OUT to the Bensalem Democrats, and/or whoever you want, in exposing the evil of this town. Don't be afraid to take a stand and let the truth be heard.

How about that, more libelous comments from the comedy duo of Martin and Saddler. I loved your stand up comedy routine at the last council meeting, priceless. Hey Wendy, your political agenda is as transparent as saran wrap. Before you go giving advice to others, get your own life in order.

Hey realtruthbetold!!! What "libelous" comments did Harris Martin and I make?? I DARE YOU TO NAME ONE!! As a matter of fact, show proof on here that anything I have posted, is wrong! As I have REPEATEDLY said before, if you believe I am in the wrong on something, PROVE IT!! Otherwise exposing the truth, is on no way libelous, because I am asking legit questions concerning the township's budget, that I am entitled to. I have PROOF to back up what I say,(BTW, my proof consists of a copy of the township's budget, and legitimate sources.), what do you have?? My life is blessed in the Lord Almighty, so why don't you worry about YOUR OWN.

Wendy, the fact that you have to ask that question speaks volumes. You will have your answer sooner than you think.

The fact that you REFUSE to answer my questions, speaks volumes to the fact that 1. You know I am in the right, and 2. YOU'RE A COWARD!! So in short, I have my answer. YOU CAN'T SAY A THING!!
I have nothing to fear or worry over, because I am doing what is right, and the Lord protects His own. THE GLORY OF THE LORD IS MY REAR GUARD!!

How is it that a video and article on an 80's concert turned into a rant about politics, religion, and slandering township employees and officials? That concert was amazing, the venue is great, and I'm more than happy to pay $5.00.

Glad that you liked the concert, Jesse. Its not that anyone had a problem with the concert being there, its in how and who is running it, and they aren't doing a very good job of it in many people's eyes. Its one of many examples of how the township has been financially irresponsible, and there are some of us who are trying to do something about it.
