Township Looking for Corporate PAL

Officials would like to open building at Firefighter's Field for Police Athletic/Activities League

If there are any companies out there with a little spare cash and a desire to help kids, the township would like to hear from them.

Public Safety Director Fred Harran told the Bensalem Business Association on Wednesday that he is hopeful the township can open a building for its second-year Police Athletic/Activities League.

“We're looking for funding,” he said.

Specifically, the township would like to utilize the building at Firefighter's Field at Rockhill Drive and Richlieu Road, which was used by the former Youth Detention Center as a maintenance facility.

“It's about 12,000 square feet,” Mayor Joseph DiGiralomo said Thursday. “It's in decent shape on the outside. We'd like to retrofit it.”

Since funding from the state is “almost at a nil,” the mayor said the township would love to obtain some corporate help.

Harran told the business association that the PAL program was so successful in its second year that it had to turn away youngsters from outside the township this year.

It began with a basketball program, he said, that has 250-275 youngsters taking part at no cost. Next up with any luck, he added, will be a street hockey program.
