What Would You Improve in Bensalem in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Bensalem, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money.

As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Bensalem to make it an even better place to live?

What is on your Bensalem wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013?

Tell us in the comment section below or blog about why you love living here!

Republicans advocate lower taxes but not this School Board (all R's). They rubber stamp the District's wish list, rush through a lucrative secret deal with teachers and sweep under the rug rampant theft of services and goods. So....good luck with that.

Take a little sprawling piece of land and transform it into a doggy play park! I've seen them at the Jersey shore and down in Florida. They are fabulous and fun for the dogs as well as their people. It's great socialization for both and with all the dog owners/walkers I see in Bensalem, I believe they would love it! I would LOVE to be a part of something special like this! Thanks! Terri D.

That is an excellent idea there does seem to be a lot of dog lovers/owners in Bensalem. I' sure it would be used by many.

I agree 100%! Core Creek Park has one, but that is a bit of a trek. Falls Twp has one, but it has no trees- no shade. I always thought Neshaminy State Park would be a great place for a dog park; as would any of our local township owned parks. Let's do this this year.

Put some speed bumps on Windsor drive and Crafton drive in Notingham people driving way to fast. Also, what about our Redwings field?? Did they forget about this park? We have kids in Notingham too! The mayor doesn't care about our section!!! We get more traffic in our section why not make the road bigger at the end of Windsor heading toward route 1(the little bridge) behind Dunkin Donuts. That's a few wishes!!

Sue no speed bumps but pave all the roads. The mayor doesn't give a shit about the Nottingham seciton! Were nothing but a cut-though for the casino.our main roads to come in and out of our neighborhood. old street rd.and old trevose rd.are nothing but potholes and trash! The neighborhood park is a disgrace! Then to stick-it to us again he puts that watertower in our backyard not his. It's time for a change

Completely agree. Seems worse in the cold weather when the Litter Patrol is not working. I walk nearly everyday, and I constantly see primarily young people and work crews that just throw or drop their fast food and Wawa refuse everywhere and anywhere as they finish with it. Those growing up in the fifties were taught to carry trash to a receptacle or bring it home and throw it out there. Subsequent generations have been raised to believe they're entitled to do whatever is most convenient to THEM. Their attitude toward litter reflects this, and we are left with the results of it as a blight on our community. As I walk I pick up trash, place it in a bag and bring it home to throw out. By the way, another related pet peeve--recycle cans without lids. WM and McCullough need to reconsider their responsibility for keeping client areas clean. On windy days the cans blow over and the contents are all over the neighborhoods.

at the end of byberry road, make the light "right on red". it's just absurd. also, agree with some of the others, lower tax rate for empty nesters. why should we have to fund schools with no kid of our own. it's very silly.

I agree with this too! It's ridiculous that PENDOT has designated this a "no turn on red" intersection. It's 3-way and the visibility is satisfactory enough that red turns could be permitted.

Yes I agree right turn on red at the end of Byberry rd!! No reason for not having it you sit and wait so long with no traffic coming.

Sidewalks and bike lanes --
especially along busy roads such as rte 13 and station avenue. Not only does it make it safer for pedestrians and bikers but it, encourages a healthily lifestyle, is friendlier to the environment, and helps to support small businesses and shops.

Sorry for the empty nesters but they must remember when they had kids young enough for school older people were paying those taxes back then for them. As far as improvements go i would like to see something done about traffic entering route 1 north towards turnpike by street rd ramps. Very unsafe people do not yield to oncoming traffic already on rt 1 and also people get tired of waiting and jump the medium strip and this is very unsafe. I have to belief there is some better lane configuration that the township could come up with to propose to Penndot.

How long is someone supposed to pay for all of the apartment complex kids to go to school? Why don't you think about increasing the sales tax as in Philly.......where 1% goes directly to the city? This way anyone who has kids in school will be doing their fair share! Let them pay (along with us of course) a little extra in sales tax.....
Give them empty nesters (who have been paying all their lives) a little break!!

The planned destruction of the beautiful areas on State Road would be moved to the blighted areas already existing on State Road. Either way there will still be a traffic nightmare.

I would like to see the area on Neshaminy Boulevard from the mall up to where Bristol Rd. crosses it, have trees trimmed and debris removed. The area near the King David Cemetery is very messy looking. Some people need to clean up their yard debris from the hurricane. There are fallen down trees with branches splattered all over their yards. I would also like to see a sidewalk all the way down Neshaminy Boulevard to the mall. Many people walk along there to the mall and back home again. It would be much safer for them. Thank you!

Agreed! I'm not knocking the $100 we got. But Parx is raking in billions... BILLIONS! I have to drive past that traffic nightmare twice a day (don't even tell me to try a different route), I think they can spare a few extra greenbacks.

and how does Bristol qualify for a grant from Parx? How are they impacted as much as we are? On top of that, they used for it a new roof on their municipal building. I'm sure they could've found a road to fix instead.

We are only getting 1/9th of what we were originally promised. Everyone seems to have forgotten we were promised $900 if the casino was approved.

This is not strictly a Bensalem issue, but when casino gambling was signed into law at what was at the time Philadelphia Park Race Track, Commonwealth residents were promised "substantial" property tax relief. In the interim our esteemed legislators have done nothing to deliver on this commitment. In fact, their inaction has made things worse as the economy fell apart, unions refused to recognize that and the "pension bomb" began to explode. Further, in order to balance the state's budget, Corbett drastically cut school funding, which has only had the affect of pushing that obligation down to local property taxpayers. In 2013 this problem needs finally to be faced up to by those we've elected locally along with their colleagues in Harrisburg. We also need responsible stewards as school board members that are willing to make the difficult decisions to prevent annual property tax increases. Over the past decade Bensalem has never missed a year without a substantial property tax increase. Other districts have. That says something about ineffectiveness from a fiscal management standpoint of the Bensalem group. Someone else already commented on certain other related issues, so I'll leave it there.

A message to the Public Works Department...
An idea for improvement would be to have one of your trucks pick up a refrigerator and microwave oven that was dumped on the blacktop road leading to the Growdon Mansion. Such a nice area, why would someone dump appliances there? Our refuse companies charge only a nominal fee to haul these items for us. This would cost almost nothing and would take only s short amount of time.

I like the DOG PARK idea. In fact, make it the piece of land that PARX owns on the SouthEast entrance over by Mechanicsville and Byberry roads. Better yet, PARX should build it for us. All that's needed is a stone parking area, about a 1/4 mile of fence, and some trees.

I like the idea of addressing the problem of traffic entering Route 1 North coming off the turnpike and Street Rd onto Route 1 North.
I would appreciate it if the Bensalem Police would enforce the wipers on/headlights on law. Additionally, too many early morning and late afternoon drivers drive with NO HEADLIGHTS ON. I know you can see but the idea here is that YOU CAN BE SEEN, and not just by other drivers but by children and others.
Here's a buck; buy a clue.

How about we get rid of the blight areas that make this town look like North Philly? I mean the motels on Rt1 that operate hourly rooms for drug dealers, prostitutes, and Philly trash to use for their tawdry affairs. The police are there everyday, several times a day for calls instead of in the neighborhoods of the people who pay taxes. Warrant units from Philadelphia Police and the US Marshals Service have located murderers from all over hiding in those seedy motels.

Oh wait, they won't do anything because those "small business owners" pay a lot to the mayor and County GOP election funds.

Please fix traffic lights, plus there's way to many of them especially St.(light)Rd. this town is way to congested, please put a right turn lane @ hulmeville&byberry in front of the pizza shop that does no buisness, except take up valuable space.

Please, please do a PERMANENT fix on the potholes on Byberry Rd between Mechanicsville and Hulmeville Rd since it breaks open every few weeks after a patch job. Also the DEEP hole when turning right from Mechanicsville onto Byberry. Does wonders for tires and rims. Behind the Lincoln Motel and Old Street Rd desperately need a repaving for some years now. Part of it was done but why did they stop before doing the road over the bridge?

When is something going to be done about the traffic light situation at the east entrance of the casino? Traffic backs up and it takes 2 or 3 lights before one can make a left turn onto Mechanicsville Rd and then only 1 - 3 cars can proceed and many go through the red light.

Why Dolores, Haven't you figured it out yet? PARX owns this town. They want the traffic lights to lead you to the casino; not leave it. None of the Street Rd lights are timed properly because anytime an eastbound vehicle trips a left turn lane traffic loop, IMMEDIATLEY ALL TRAFFIC STOPS TO LET THAT CAR IN! Getting out is a different story. And if you just want to drive by it; say if your going to work, or taking the kids to the doctor or just going anywhere that takes you past PARX on Street Rd.; you better add 10-15 minutes to get through the 7 traffic lights in just 1.2 miles of Street Rd between the Turnpike easy-pass off ramp and Mechanicsville Rd. Nothing will be done to fix the traffic lights around PARX because to them, there is nothing wrong.
