About an hour after the white smoke was seen in St. Peter's Square, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has taken the name Francis, was named the 266th pope.
Father James MacNew of Holy Family University told Patch that he was excited about the new pope and that his choice of name shows that he has courage to live out the Gospel.
"In taking the name 'Francis,' the new Holy Father points toward the particularly Franciscan virtues of humility, simplicity, courage in living out the Gospel amid the challenges of the real world, love of holy poverty and, of course, Franciscan joy!" he said.
