Year in Review: Top Stories of 2012
See what stories the Bensalem community cared the most about in 2012.
Now that 2012 is coming to a close, it's time to see what Patch stories were the most popular in Bensalem.
1. Police enforced mandatory evacuations throughout Bensalem in October due to Hurricane Sandy. Flooding was imminent due to heavy rain from the hurricane and high tides, so Bensalem Emergency Management issued mandatory evacuations for areas along local waterways.
2. In February, Patch asked where you go locally for breakfast. Fifty nine percent of voters in the Bensalem community voted for Pookies as the best spot to go for the most important meal of the day. Red House Bagels was a close second.
3. James, a Great Dane from Bensalem, won "First In Group" for the Working Group at "The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®" on Saturday, Nov. 17. James is a five year-old Great Dane owned by Mary Ellen Thomas from Bensalem. He has won 10 "Best In Show" titles, bested 38 Specialty Shows and was number one Great Dane for 2010 and 2011. James' handler is Marie Somershow of McAdoo, PA.
4. In July, the Union Fire Company was suspended. The decision to suspend operations of the volunteer fire company was not the result of an isolated incident, but rather a culmination of numerous incidents and issues over the past 30 months wherein the leadership of Union Fire Company has failed to follow both administrative and operational directions from the township, resulting in a loss of confidence in the leadership of Union Fire Company.
5. The Bensalem School District announced in May that employees in its facilities department falsified time records and collected wages that they did not earn or deserve. At that time, two of the employees had already resigned and Superintendent David Baugh was considering disciplinary options and dismissal for others.
