This week, we look at reliable cars for about $5,000.
We've talked about big luxury, big car and big price tags. So we feel a little bad for recommending spending so much money all the time. So this week, we want to take a step back and go to the extreme by offering five options for used vehicles that are on the market for less than $5,000—because we know sometimes it really is "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems." 1. 2002 Kia Sportage —$4,990 Yes, it has 88,676 miles on it already, but you can't really beat that price for an SUV. Plus, it's got a 4-cylinder, 2-liter engine, power windows—perhaps not the most upgraded features, but, hey, as long as it gets you from point A to point B, right? Available at Bristol Auto Mall in Levittown. 2. 1999 Nissan Quest GXE — $4,495 This car, with 105,309 miles …

Find the cheapest gas in Bensalem.
After months of a steady decline, gas prices saw it’s first uptick last week, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The national average this for a gallon of gas rose 1.7 cents from last week. In Bucks and Montgomery Counties, it went up less than 1 cent, .9, to be exact, making the average price $3.472, that’s 11.4 cents lower than a month ago and 38.3 less than last year’s prices. Since national gas prices peaked at the end of February, motorists nationwide have felt welcome relief at the pump in the form of falling prices, the report states; however, the recent broader increase in retail gas prices has been supported by higher global crude oil prices. Plus, news over the weekend of an Israeli airstrike in Syria raised fresh concerns of …

The Bucks County Department of Health inspects hundreds of restaurants and cafeterias each year to ensure there are no public safety dangers lurking in the kitchens.
In 2003, tainted green onions served at a Chi Chi's restaurant in western Pennsylvania sparked an outbreak of Hepatitis A that infected more than 500 patrons, killing at least four. The green onions originated from a farm in Mexico, but the investigation by the Center for Disease Control suggested that the storage and preparation of the green onions contributed to the outbreak. Settlements from the lawsuits effectively forced Chi-Chi's to close its restaurants in North America in 2004. It is exactly this type of scenario that Bucks County Director of Environmental Health Bill Roth and his team of health inspectors hope to prevent. "We are not trying to put anybody out of business," said Roth. "By educating restaurant owners on proper food …

A manager at Chancey's Country Garden in Bristol Township shares when the spring planting should begin.
It's May, which means you're probably rounding up mulch and spring flowers for planting. Debbie Schiefer, manager of Chancey's Country Garden on Bath Road in Bristol Township, said after Mother's Day is the best time to plant petunias, pansies, potato vines, vinca vines, hibiscus and vegetables. "It's a temperature thing," Schiefer said. "The frost does kill them." All of the business' annuals are in a greenhouse to ensure cooler temps overnight do not harm them, she said. For some people, spring plantings have already been done and that may be OK, "as long as you're not going to get a freeze," she said. This blog from The Old Farmer's Almanac offers tips for predicting a frost. In the coming days, Shiefer said she'll begin integrating …
The Bucks County Officer of Consumer Protection advises car-owners to do their homework carefully when looking for a regular mechanic.
The following was provided by the Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection: Q. I recently graduated from college, have a good job, and was able to finally buy myself a new car. I want to make sure that I follow the maintenance schedule that was recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The salesman at the dealership highly recommends that I use their service center for routine maintenance and repairs. Some of my friends and co-workers are recommending their mechanics, telling me that some dealership services are overpriced and even that some mechanics tend to take advantage of women, assuming that they are not as knowledgeable about cars. What do I need to know to make sure I take proper care of my new car without getting ripped off? B.G…
