Burned Cell Tower Replaced on Byberry Road

The temporary structure replaces a cell phone tower damaged by fire last week.

Crews sent by AT&T Monday worked on installing a replacement for the cell tower that had been damaged in a fire Friday afternoon.

One of the workers told Patch that the new tower is a temporary replacement. A spokesperson with AT&T said that the company is working through the process to get a permanent solution installed at the site located next to the Bensalem Public Works building on Byberry Road.

At 11 a.m. Friday, a welder's torch ignited some insulation and wiring at the 70-foot level of the 118-foot tower, the Bensalem Fire Inspector told phillyburbs.com. The fire engulfed the top of the tower and had died down to a smolder by the time PECO crews arrived to shut off power to the tower, making it safer for the firefighters to douse the flames.

The structure swayed and listed in the light breeze, but it never collapsed. However, the damage had been done, and cranes had dismantled the tower by the end of the day.
