Kids' Crafts Commemorate Flag Day

Barnes and Noble doesn't overlook this holiday.

Flag day. If there was ever a more-forgotten holiday, next to Arbor Day, Flag Day would stand proud, waving its red, white, and blue arms in relative obscurity. Common reactions to the mentioning of Flag Day are “When is that, anyway?” and “Is that even a holiday?” Yes, Flag Day is a holiday, albeit not a national one, and it is interesting to note that Pennsylvania was actually the first (and only) state in the continental U.S. to adopt Flag Day as a state holiday, according to this article on Philly.com. Regardless of how overlooked Flag Day may be, one local bookstore chose not to ignore it.

The Barnes and Noble, located in the Neshaminy Mall, held its twice-weekly kids reading session in the children's section of the store where children were read stories and were then were provided with art supplies in which kids were able to make their own American flags.

These stars-and-stripes came in all sorts of shapes, colors, and varying stars, but the heart was there. One young child looked incredibly enthusiastic about their creation as they tugged on their mother's dress with one hand, colorful craft waving in the other.

“These reading sessions typically last about a half-an-hour, sometimes less depending on the general attention span of the group,” one store associate said in casual conversation. “We will typically read 4-5 stories and then top it off with arts and crafts. And since it was Flag Day, it was only appropriate that we let the children create flags.”

These reading sessions are free and open to the public and occur every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Barnes and Noble children's section. Be sure to check out this Thursday's "Fathers Day Storytime."
