Rubix Kube Performs in Bensalem's Summer Concert Series

A live tribute to the music of the 1980s.

On Wednesday evening, the 1980s tribute band Rubix Cube performed live in front of a packed audience at the TD Bank Amphitheater on Byberry Road. The event was part of the annual Summer Concert Series, which hosts over a dozen shows per season.

The band, which is well-known in the local area, tours the country performing their covers of famous 1980s hits such as "Billie Jean," "Like a Virgin," and "Jessie's Girl," which were among the songs played tonight. The band also covered "Come on Eileen," "Walking on Sunshine," and "Centerfold." The crowd was particularly enthusiastic about Rubix Kube's version of Nena's 1984 hit song "99 Red Balloons" as the band had members scatter actual red balloons throughout the audience.

"I think this is awesome," said Joe Hough of Northeast Philadelphia. This was Hough's first concert at the Bensalem amphitheatre, but not the first time he's seen Rubix Cube. "I saw them when they played in Philadelphia. They're great. I want them to perform at my wedding!" Hough said enthusiastically. When asked about the five dollars, he said that it was "no big deal" and that it would be more expensive to see them anywhere else.

Bryan Robertson, of Bensalem, has attended one previous concert at the amphitheatre before. "I like 'em better when they're free," Robertson said, "but the five dollars is not a big deal." When asked if he would go more often to the concert series if they were free, Robertson replied that it didn't really make much of a difference.

"Quality entertainment costs money," said Dawn Davis, the manager of community affairs for the township. "And if we could get away with not charging people, we would. But it's the economy. With higher gas prices comes higher band prices; many of these bands have to travel to Bensalem from all over the country. But five dollars is cheaper than a movie, cheaper than a pizza, and the entertainment quality here is very high."

Davis, who took over the position from Dave Fiedler in the past year, truly loves her job and is very enthusiastic about the Summer Concert Series. "Most of my work can be a little mundane, but this [the concert series] is just spectacular. I love meeting all of these interesting people. And the residents embrace it, too. We get a lot of positive feedback on our social networking pages."

"The Summer Concert Series is the mayor's brainchild," said Barbara Barnes, the administrative assistant to Mayor DiGirolamo. "And he's been able to build all of this, and hold all of these concerts, without raising taxes. He's the smartest man I've ever met."

The Bensalem Summer Concert Series is in its 10th year and runs every Wednesday until August 31, with a special Doo Wop show officially closing the series on October 1. Some of the upcoming highlights include a Bon Jovi tribute show on July 20 and a tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival on August 31.
