Weekend Planner: Check Out Some Local Events

Another weekend is here. Time to plan for some fun!

Where/when: , 20 E State St, Doylestown, Saturday, 11 a.m.

Why go: As part of the theater’s matinee program, bring the kids to a movie for just $4 each, or become a member of the theater and attend for free. Besides the movie, the theater often plans fun events to coincide with each showing, and encourages kids and adults to dress in costume to go along with the movie. This weekend’s movie – The Adventures of Milo and Otis.

Cost: $4, free for members

Where/when: The Historic Moland House, 1641 Old York Rd, Hartsville, Sunday, 1 p.m.

Why go: Professor Edward G. Lengel of the University of Virginia will review the detailed childhood drawing of a two-masted sailing vessel done by a 10-year old George Washington that will be on display.  Lengel is an American military historian and Editor-in-Chief of The Papers of George Washington documentary editing project at the University in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Why go: The Craven Hall Historical Society, Inc. will present a special program on colonial herbal recipes used by early settlers to treat various ailments. Instead of making an appointment with the local doctor or dentist, colonial families sought out natural remedies in everyday places such as gardens or backyards.  The program, which is free, is included in Craven Hall’s monthly house tour and tour of the newly opened John Fitch Steamboat Museum.  The Open House takes place from noon until 3:00 p.m.

Why go: Coffeehouse-style evenings for adults and teens older than 15 – music, poetry, music, whatever. Come to perform or just enjoy.

Where/when: , 625 Red Lion Rd, Huntingdon Valley, Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4p .m.

Why go: Bulk up your book collection on the cheap.

Where/when: AOY Art Center, 949 Mirror Lake Rd, Yardley, Saturday at noon.

Why go: The first event of the 2012 season will be held at the AOY Art Center, home to a variety of art shows and events throughout the year, as well as host to educational programs for children and adults. Juror Tricia Fagan selected 71 pieces of artwork in a variety of media out of 300 for this show. Fagan is Director of The Gallery at Mercer County Community College.

Why go: Get a jump on celebrating the wearin’ o’ the green!

Where/when: , 237 Elmwood Ave, Feasterville Trevose, Sunday, 3 p.m.

Why go: Come and join the bidding! All Proceeds goes to the . There will be drinks, food, friends and bidding wars.

Why go: Play bingo, help babies through the March of Dimes. Simple and fun!

Cost: It’s a benefit, so donations are accepted …

Where/when: , 25 Upper Holland Rd, Richboro, Saturday, 3 p.m.

Why go: Join this interactive educational program with historical reenactor, Michael Jesberger as he "enlists" you in the Union army. Learn what life was like on the march, in camp and in battle. Learn about and see the equipment and weapons used as well as the personal items of a "Yankee" soldier.
