Bucks Knock Out Hunger Goal: $16,000 for 64,000 Meals

The United Way is raising money to Knock Out Hunger in Bucks County.

Written by Katie Pilot, United Way Bucks Marketing Intern

Four thousand residents of Bucks County do not know where their next meal is coming from, according to the United Way of Bucks County.  Along with many fantastic community partners, we want to knock out this problem.

On August 9, hundreds of volunteers will package 64,000 meals – each representing one hungry Bucks resident – at Ann’s Choice in Warminster. These meals will be distributed to food pantries in the Bucks County Opportunity Council network. This event, known as Bucks Knocks Out Hunger, is a joint effort of UW Bucks and Bucks County Opportunity Council with support from Outreach, Inc. and Rolling Harvest Food Rescue.

Business partners, such as Calkins Media, the Faucet Group, Ann’s Choice, Natural Awakenings, and many more, are also involved. Each meal costs 25 cents to package, meaning we have an initial fundraising goal of $16,000. The more we raise, the more we will be able to provide.

At $25,000 dollars, we can package 100,000 meals. If we reach our ultimate goal of $36,000 dollars, we will distribute 100,000 meals, along with apples, ground beef and chicken to the pantries.

We will also start a partnership with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue to provide fresh, local produce. This event is similar to a food packing event that took place on Martin Luther King Day last January. Volunteers spent three hours packing 23,540 meals with the help of an Outreach, Inc. representative.

Ideally, BKO Hunger will more than triple that figure. Want to get involved? Check out www.uwbucks.com/bkohunger to make a donation. More volunteer spots will be available once we reach $25,000, so keep an eye out!
