Philadelphia to Name Best Food Vendor

Food truck vendors will compete for the Vendy Award.

Our town offers plenty of weekend fun, but sometimes the lure of Philadelphia beckons—and our new Summer in the City feature can help guide you to the fun.

If you feel like venturing out a little farther from home, check here for a weekly suggestion of something fun or interesting to do in the City of Brotherly Love. Whether it's restaurant to try, a festival to attend or special museum exhibits, we'll feature something different every Thursday.

After six years of success in New York City, the Vendy Awards are coming to Philadelphia. The food truck cook-off will take place at the Piazza at Schmidts on Saturday, July 9, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Watch as the vendors go head-to-head in a cook off that will determine who is Philadelphia's best street vendor. Awards will be given for Rookie of the Year, Best Dessert, People's Taste Award and the Vendy Cup—which will be awarded by a panel of celebrity judges.

Some of the competing finalists include King of Falafel (Middle Eastern food), Sweet Box (cupcakes), Magic Carpet Foods (whole world vegetarian), Sugar Philly (desserts), and Cucina Zapata (blending of Thai and Mexican) to name a few.

Tickets to the event include food from all of the vendor finalists, wine, beer and soda. Early bird tickets are sold out, but general admission tickets (starting at $55) are still available. It is cheaper, however to buy in groups of four.

Proceeds from the Vendy Awards will benefit The Food Trust, a non-profit organization that strives to improve the health
of children and adults while promoting good nutrition and advocating
for better public policy.

Bring an empty stomach and let Patch know which vendor was your favorite.
