Rofo Genuardi's to Close

The grocery store will close its doors after a Thursday announcement that some Genuardi's will be bought by Giant and others will outright close.

Turns out there is some truth to those rumors.

The Royersford on Buckwalter Road will be closing its doors.

GIANT Food Stores of Carlisle has entered into an agreement with Genuardi’s Family Markets, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc., to acquire 16 Genuardi’s stores in the Greater Philadelphia area for $106 million.

With Giant in such close proximity to the Royersford Genuardi's, Safeway Inc. decided to close the doors to the location. Other closures include Exton and Norristown.

The sale includes the Pennsylvania locations in Springfield, Jamison, Newtown, Langhorne, Chalfont, West Chester, East Marlborough, St. Davids, Wynnewood, Flourtown, Huntingdon Valley, Spring House, King of Prussia, Maple Glen, Roslyn and North Wales.

“GIANT is always looking for convenient locations to better serve our customers,” said Rick Herring, president, GIANT Food Stores. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to expand our presence in greater Philadelphia and serve new customers. We look forward to providing customers with the quality, selection, and savings that they have come to expect from GIANT.”

Upon completion of the sale, GIANT plans to convert the former Genuardi’s stores into GIANT Food Stores. Employment opportunities with GIANT will be made available to Genuardi’s associates in these stores. Additional details regarding the conversions will be announced at a later date.

The sale is currently expected to close within the first half of 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including expiration of the applicable waiting period under the Hart- Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976.

Well, we could just scrap the whole strip mall idea and build an amusement park! Has anyone thought of that?

From an old genardis employee from the store closed safeway did not care about us like the genardis brothers did. I think its just sad because everyone is losing their full-time jobs in this econmy and their only hiring part time every where and for those who worked for genardis are losing everything they have. I should know i was a full-time food manager and now im just a part-time deli person with low income to support my family.
