Bencardino Excavating Contracted to Work at Lakehurst Naval Base

Bencardino Excavating has been hired by DJ’s Mechanical of Millstone Township, N.J. to work at Lakehurst naval base in New Hanover Township, N.J. The two contractors previously joined forces on another historic site, when Bencardino Excavating repaired a fire-line break at the Ben Franklin Post Office in Old City, Philadelphia.

The job at Lakehurst consists of installing a 5,000-foot new force main with a 4-inch sanitary line to a new pump station. In addition, Bencardino Excavating will do all excavation for the new station, demolition of the old pump station building and blacktop restoration.

Naval Air Station Lakehurst is part of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst military installation about 18 miles southwest of Trenton, NJ. The Lakehurst division is a historic military installation where many notorious events have occurred, most notably the Hindenburg disaster that occurred on May 6, 1937. The Hindenburg, a German-built passenger airship that was the largest ever to fly, was destroyed in a blaze of fire over the military base.  Of the 97 passengers aboard, only 62 survived the fiery crash.

“We are happy to work with DJ’s Mechanical for the project at Lakehurst naval base,” said Louis Bencardino, owner of Bencardino Excavating.  “We’ve worked together before, and we’re always pleased when another contractor has confidence to hire your company again because they believe you do quality work.”

The job is expected to start March 1 and take about a month to complete. Dave Fink will be the project manager. All Bencardino Excavating employees will need to go through a military clearance to access the base for this project.
