Fisher's Tudor House Goes Green

This famous Bensalem dining establishment and banquet facility is leading the way to eco-friendly dining and events.

Area diners know that this longtime favorite Bensalem restaurant excels at seafood, and also meats, poultry, pasta dishes and many others. In addition, the on-premises bakery is known for its stunning high quality cakes. Many families and companies have enjoyed the spacious banquet facilities for weddings, showers or holiday parties over the years.

What they might not know is how "green" the restaurant has become. The restaurant hosts a "Green Event" this Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. After the official "green" eco-friendly garland cutting, there will be a tour of the facilities, highlighting the eco-friendly features pertaining to water and energy conservation, and recycling. The event is open to invited guests only.

Owners Pete and George Pavlis of believe in eco-friendly living. Almost 900 solar panels have been installed on the top level of the parking area, which supply between 60 to 100 percent of the electrical power. The solar panels produce about 240 megawatts (240,000 kilowatt-hours) of electricity annually.

The restaurant keeps track of its energy consumption by utilizing an energy monitoring system that regulates the demand. Empty rooms are neither heated nor cooled. Fluorescent lights and compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) provide more light while saving substantial amounts of energy.  Even the parking garage lighting has been converted to CFLs. The owners estimate they will save 56,000 kilowatts of electricity per year.

Cooking appliances are turned off when not in use to conserve natural gas. In addition, two huge water heaters and two thousand gallon hot water storage tanks were replaced by demand water heaters. Hot water is produced only when needed. Instead of high temperature dishwashers, the restaurant uses more efficient low-temperature dishwashers.

The owners have replaced old toilets with new WaterSense water-efficient toilets that conserve 1.4 gallons of water with each flush. WaterSense is a program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. New technology has allowed toilets to use 20 percent less water than the current federal standards, while still providing equal or superior performance.

When it comes to recycling, the restaurant recycles everything it can including glass, plastic, cardboard, cans and cooking oil.

Ever heard of a "green wedding"? Now eco-conscious brides and grooms can host their big event here in an earth-friendly way. The staff will help you plan your dream "sustainable" wedding.
