Our meetings are open to members of our association and those who are interested in joining. Our August meeting is at Holiday Inn Express located on Bristol Pike. Our Guest Speaker will be State Representative Gene DiGirolamo.
A lifelong resident of Bensalem, Bucks County, Rep. Gene DiGirolamo is serving his 10th term in the state House. During the past 18 years in Harrisburg, DiGirolamo has been a vocal advocate for additional drug and alcohol rehabilitation, individuals with special needs, the improvement of student athletics statewide and quality health care.
For the 2013-14 session, he is serving a second term as the majority chairman of the House Human Services Committee, a position where he can effectively continue his advocacy of issues relating to drug and alcohol treatment and prevention, physical and intellectual disabilities, and individuals with mental illness. DiGirolamo is also a member of the House Consumer Affairs Committee.
As a long-time advocate to raise awareness of drug and alcohol addiction and ensure accessibility to treatment, he has authored legislation increasing funding for rehabilitation centers and establishing a separate state cabinet agency, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, to streamline drug and alcohol treatment services in Pennsylvania. In addition, DiGirolamo authored Act 148 of 2012 to create methadone death and incident review teams in cases where methadone was either a primary or secondary cause of death.
For his efforts, he has received the Public Servant of the Year Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Star of Distinction Award from Liberty Resources, the Champion for Human Services Award from the Philadelphia Alliance and the Leadership Award from the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers Organization of Pennsylvania.
Before running for public office, Representative DiGirolamo was President of DiGirolamo Farms Inc. a small farm market and deli located in the heart of Bensalem Township. He was elected Auditor in 1992.
He is also engaged in a number of community activities, including being a member of St. Mary’s Medical Center Advisory Board. His daughter, Mary, is a practicing registered nurse.
