'Paws to Heart' Seeks Funds for Vet Care

A Bensalem-based animal rescue group is fundraising to help cover the costs associated with providing veterinary care to rescue dogs and cats.

A Bensalem-based no-kill animal rescue group dedicated to finding foster shelter and permanent homes for cats and dogs is seeking financial help covering costs of spaying and neutering.

Nonprofit group Paws to Heart Rescue launched a spay and neuter fund on GoFundMe on Aug. 19 with the goal of raising $1,000. To date, the drive has netted $288.

"As some of you know, the most expensive part of running an animal rescue organization is the veterinary care of our furry friends, the animals," Kristen Nicole Sarmiento writes on the personal online fundraising Web site. "In an effort to prevent additional litters, Paws to Heart will use a portion of this fund to give out one free exam, spay/neuter, and vaccinations to a pet owner in need."

Someone in need would be selected each month and would have the opportunity to get their pet neutered or spayed free of charge.

It costs about $80 to $100 to have each animal vetted, fed and ready for adoption, according to Sarmiento.

"We want to help more," she writes.

Wish list items ranging from a teeth cleaning to flea and heart worm preventative care, cat spaying, dog neutering, vaccinations and microchipping are listed on the site, along with prices ranging from $25 to $120.
