Myers Sets New Home Run Mark as Tigers Sweep Nyack

Holy Family Softball vs. Nyack recap. (04/03/13)

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Newtown, Pa. - Senior Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) became the all-time home run leader as the Holy Family University softball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Nyack College Wednesday afternoon at Helen Randle Park.  Holy Family won game one by the score of 3-2 and then took game two by the score of 8-0 in five innings.

Holy Family is now 11-11 overall and 6-2 in the CACC, while Nyack falls to 4-13 overall and 0-12 in conference action.

Myers, who entered the game tied with former Holy Family standout Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Whitby, Ontario/Fr. Leo J. Austin C.S.S.) (2009-2012) for the program record with 21 career home runs, moved into first place all by herself after her second at-bat in game one.  With two outs in the bottom half of the third inning Myers launched the ball over the right field fence for career home run number 22.

As a team, Holy Family hit five home runs on the afternoon.  Junior Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)) came through with two homers in game two, while fellow classmates Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) and AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) each hit solo blasts.

Game 1: Holy Family 3, Nyack 2

In game one, Myers provided Holy Family with all the offense it would need in the one-run victory.  Myers gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning as she drove in freshman Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) with a single to right field.  Casey finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Two innings later Myers struck again, this time with the record-breaking blast to right field.  Dalton led the inning off reaching base after getting hit by a pitch.  Nyack went on to retire the next two hitters as Myers stepped to the plate with two outs.  The two-run shot gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead through three innings.  Myers went 2-for-3 in the game and drove in all three runs.

Borrelli held Nyack scoreless through 6.1 innings allowing only one hit and striking out three hitters.  However, after a walk to senior Taylor Brown, freshman Tori Flemming followed with her first career home run to cut the Tigers' lead to 3-2.

After a trip to the mound and a pitching change by the Tigers, junior Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) entered the game in relief and struck out the next two Nyack batters to close out the game.  Borrelli improved to 2-3 after the win, while Reuscher picked up the team's first save of the season.

Game Two: Holy Family 8, Nyack 0 (5)

In game two the Tigers set the tone early as Dalton led the first inning off with a solo shot to give the home squad a 1-0 lead.  Dalton connected on just the second pitch of the inning for her first home run of the season.

Holy Family added two more runs in the second inning via the long ball.  This time it was Corrado who came through with her third home run of the season making the score 3-0.  Freshman Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling), who led the inning off with a walk, scored on the play.

In the third, Holy Family continued its power hitting as the Tigers tacked on four more runs to increase their lead to  7-0.  With one out, Borrelli smacked a shot to center field for her third home run of the season.  As the inning progressed, the Tigers had runners at the corner as Corrado stepped to the plate for the second time in as many innings.  This time she would smack a three-run shot to center field to cap the Tigers four-run outburst.  Corrado, who leads the Tigers with four home runs this season, finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in a career-high five runs.

Holy Family closed out the game in the fifth inning after junior Hayley Brennan (Frankford, Del./Indian River) drove in Daubert for the team's eighth run of the game resulting in the eight-run mercy rule to go into effect.   Daubert, who reached base after a two-out error by the Nyack right fielder, scored after Brennan delivered a hit to right field.

The Nyack right fielder made a sliding attempt to catch the ball and nearly came away with an inning ending putout, but the ball came loose in her glove and touched the turf resulting in a hit for Brennan.  Daubert was running the entire time as she scored before a play could be made at the plate.

Reuscher (6-2) picked up her sixth victory of the season and second straight complete game shutout.  Reuscher scattered six hits in five innings of work and struck out three batters.

Holy Family is back in action on Friday, April 5 as the Tigers travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 2 p.m.
