Tigers Come Up Short Versus Georgian Court, 2-1

Holy Family Women's Soccer Recap vs. Georgian Court (9/19/12)

Tigers Come Up Short Versus Georgian Court, 2-1

BOX SCORE

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to Georgian Court University by the score of 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Holy Family is now 0-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play, while Georgian Court improves to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the CACC.

Holy Family scored the game's first goal midway through the first half as freshman Jenna Richards (Croydon, Pa./Conwell Egan) scored her second goal of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.  Senior Kathryn Helkowski (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan) led a pass from 20-yards out as Richards connected in front of the net for the score in the 27th minute.

Georgian Court countered less than five minutes later with a goal of its own as sophomore Carleigh Gorman launched a shot towards Holy Family senior goalkeeper Rachel Dunkle (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood).  Despite making a play on the shot, the ball deflected off her hands into the back of the net for the score.

The score would remain tied up until the 62nd minute when Georgian Court broke the 1-1 deadlock.  On a corner kick attempt for the Lions, senior Becky Witmer took the kick and launched the ball towards the goal.  Dunkle, who made four saves in the game, caught the attempt but crossed the goal line in the process, which resulted in a goal for the Lions.  It marked Witmer's second goal of the season as Georgian Court led 2-1.

Later in the half, Holy Family nearly tied the game as senior Melissa Benson (Rockledge, Pa./Little Flower) headed the ball towards an empty net. However, Georgian Court junior Farrell Pomponio made a key block to keep the ball from going into the back of the net in the 73rd minute.

Holy Family held an edge in shots 16-11, while both teams were pretty much even in corner kicks with the Lions having one more than the Tigers, 7-6.

Freshman goalkeeper Casey O'Connor made seven saves in net for the Lions.  As mentioned, Dunkle made four stops in net and in the process surpassed 100 saves for her career.  She ranks eighth all-time with 102 career saves.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22 as the Tigers travel to face Felician College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
