Tigers Shutdown Wilmington's Offense to Complete Sweep

Holy Family Softball vs Wilmington Recap (04/22/13)

GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Newtown, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team extended its winning streak to four games after sweeping visiting Wilmington University by the scores of 3-0 and 1-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Monday afternoon at Helen Randle Park.

Holy Family evened its overall record to 20-20 after the two victories and improved to 14-8 in conference play, while Wilmington is now 28-18 overall and 15-7 in the CACC.  The Wildcats eight-game losing streak was snapped as a result.

Juniors Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) combined for 14 innings of shutout ball for the Tigers and limited Wilmington to only ten hits on the afternoon.  Both pitchers also struck out five batters a piece in the complete game victories.

Offensively, junior AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) finished the afternoon 4-for-7 at the plate to go along with two RBI to lead the offense.  Senior Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) hit her fifth home run of the season and 24th of her career in game one.

Game One: Holy Family 3, Wilmington 0

In game one, the Tigers scored the game's first run in the first inning to lead 1-0.  Dalton and freshman Alicia Alvarado (Palmdale, Calif./Paraclete) led the inning off with back-to-back hits before Wilmington's starting pitcher, sophomore Chelsea Botsch, struck out the next two hitters.  Freshman Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) followed with a single to center field to load the bases and keep the Tigers' inning alive.

With two outs and the bases full, junior Hayley Brennan (Frankford, Del./Indian River) came through with a clutch base hit scoring Dalton.  Botsch managed to end the Tigers' potential big inning forcing freshman Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) to pop out to second base.

The one run was all Alligood (7-7) would need as she limited Wilmington to only five hits, while striking out five through seven innings of work.  Alligood recorded her second shutout in as many days and fifth of the season.

Botsch (10-8) also went the distance for the Wildcats as she scattered nine hits in six innings allowing only two earned runs.  She struck out two batters in the defeat.

Holy Family added its second run in the fifth inning off the bat of Myers who hit her 24th career home run over the right field fence.  The Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with a run scoring double by Dalton.

Game Two: Holy Family 1, Wilmington 0

In game two, Reuscher and senior Katie Warrington matched zeros in the run column for five innings, until the Tigers finally broke through with the game's only run in the fifth inning.

Senior Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) recorded a one-out single to center field and would advance to second after a sacrifice bunt by junior Valerie Miller (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson).  With two outs, Dalton followed with a bloop single that dropped in shallow left field over the head of the short stop scoring Iden.

Reuscher (9-4) picked up her ninth victory of the season and her fourth shutout.  She allowed five hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.

Warrington (14-4), who had the Tigers on their toes all game long, struck out 11 batters in the hard-luck loss.  She scattered three hits in six innings of work, while allowing one earned run.

The Wildcats threatened in the sixth inning after freshman Cambria Ziemba led the inning off with a single.  After a strikeout by Reuscher for the first out of the inning, junior Christin Headley followed with a base hit to right field to advance Ziemba into scoring position.

Wilmington's rally would be short-lived after Myers threw out Ziemba attempting to steal third base.  Reuscher went on to strikeout senior Jillian Stafford to end the inning.

In the seventh, Wilmington managed to get a runner on second base with two outs, but Reuscher once again shutdown the Wildcats forcing a groundout to end the game.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, April 24 as the Tigers close out their home schedule hosting cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3 p.m. at Helen Randle Park.
