An Uneasy Truth

This is a personal view of an establishment who's practices need to be questioned. Selling old food at a discounted prices does not equate to having great deals.

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, and Good Evening. I would like to discuss something that has been on my mind, and possibly the minds of other shoppers in Bensalem. The Bensalem Wholesale Meat Market has been open for business for years now, and has been serving the public to best of their abilities. For this I have no complaint, but it has come to my attention something that just isn't right. All of you shoppers who know of the Meat Market's, great low prices, and unbelievable deals, ever wonder why their items are so cheap? Now I'm new to the Bensalem Patch, so this may be old news for some readers out there. Here's what I've noticed the last few times I have shopped in the Meat Market. In this store the low prices are due to a lot of the products in the store either being expired, or close to expiring. It may sound gross, and or even weird but it's the truth.Let me site a few examples.

Yoplait Yogurt. Normally .89 to $1.10 each. In the Meat Market, an entire case of 14 or more costs only $1. Now that may sound fabulous, but if you really think about it,why would anyone sell a "Case" of yogurt for only a $1? Because the entire case is about to expire. So if you walked into the store on the 15th the entire case is due to expire on the 18th. Only 3 days before 14 yogurts start to turn, and make your enjoyment of a healthy snack not so enjoyable.

Here's another example. Frozen Items. Such as a large size bag of chicken nuggets, holding about 30+ nuggets inside. This bag anywhere else would be $4.99 - $6.49 a bag easy, but at the Meat Market it's........you guessed it, $1. Due to it already being expired. By about a few days.

Now I have shopped at the MM for quite some time now, and have been glad to buy the actual meat from the Butcher's dept., and have also been glad that I got a good deal on it. What bothers me is that at least 5 days out of the week, when I drive by, there's a truck outside making a delivery of some type. So somebody please answer this question for me. If your Grocery Store (for lack of a better term) is receiving deliveries of all types and kinds of food, at least 5 days out of the week, why do you have so many items that are expired, or expiring? I mean it killed me to know that there were some Pillsbury Toaster Strudel packages I found for my kids for a great price, and I had to pass because the Exp Date read 11, 14, 2011. I was like "DAMN!!". We're in the month of March and you guys are putting out items that are well over 3 months old? Seriously?

Look folks, this is where I stand on this subject. As a male shopper, I love a good deal on ground beef, ribs, and whatnot, but I am a father, and I can't very well take a chance on buying something for my family that will potentially put them in the hospital. I don't know, this is one of those times where you have to either make the choice of still shopping at a place that purposely sells 3 day old bread, 5 month old frozen meat, without a care in the world, or just leave it alone all together. I have severely cut back on my purchasing from the Meat Market. Everything I pick up I look at the date 1st, make sure it's not expired, and then decide if I still want it.

For a place like this to have been opened for so long, and these are the ways they do things, is not cool. You're going to have to make a choice for yourselves people, and see what I'm talking about. For now, just be aware of what you buy from there, and how old it is before you go gaga over the low low price.

Thanks for listening.
