April Happenings in Bucks County

April showers might bring May flowers, but the month of April is also bringing with it plenty of fun events happening all over Bucks County! From musicals and arts festivals to a Civil War reenactment and even a train ride with the Easter Bunny, there’s plenty to see and do throughout the countryside this month.

· April 4-19 – Join Town & Country Players for a night filled with music and excitement as they present “The Scarlet Pimpernel, A Musical.” Follow wealthy baronet Sir Percy Blakeney as he assumes his secret identity and sets about saving French individuals from the tragedy of the guillotine, leaving behind only a single card showing a small scarlet pimpernel at each of his rescues. Join the search for this masked guardian and watch as the beginnings of the French Revolution unfold.

· April 4-27 – Come see what local artists have diligently worked on at the 3rd Annual Juried Art Show. The Artists of Yardley will be displaying their unique works of art for free at the AOY Art Center.

· April 5 – Grab the kids and join the Bucks County Performing Arts Center for “Hatched,” the depiction of a newborn chick breaking out of her shell in the early morning sunlight to the strange world of an American farm. Perfect for young children and their families, this play features handcrafted puppets, storytelling and live music with dance accompaniment.

· April 5-6 – Embark on a journey into the world of fantasy and “days of future past” at the New Hope Steampunk Fantasy Faire presented by The Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce. Put on a costume and join the myriad of performers taking the stage at a variety of venues including Havana Restaurant & Bar and The Raven. Although there’s a lot of mystery surrounding this event, attendees are guaranteed a weekend full of entertainment and excitement.

· April 5-6 – Take part in the action and drama of the Civil War right here in the countryside when the Historical Society of Bensalem presents the 25th Annual Civil War Reenactment at Neshaminy State Park. This weekend-long event recreates the Union and Confederate military encampment as well as various battles and other events.

 

· April 6 – Chocolate-obsessed? Don’t miss the chance to sample an authentic 18th-century hot chocolate at this tasty event hosted by the Friends of Washington Crossing Historic Park from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The beverage sampling is free with a paid tour of Washington Crossing Historic Park.

· April 8-15 – Come to the Bucks County Playhouse for “In the Mood,” a musical celebration of the 1940s in America. This show takes guests back in time with the music of artists such as Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Frank Sinatra and other 1940s icons. This upbeat musical revue will be sure to have all audience members toe-tapping and singing along to the music that helped America win the war!

· April 12-20 – Hop aboard the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad for the Easter Bunny Express! Join the Easter Bunny himself for a 50-minute train ride in one of the vintage 1920’s passenger cars and get your chance for photos and other special treats. Opt for an open-air car ticket and enjoy the beauty of the Bucks County countryside in spring.

· April 13 – Celebrate the talent of local Bucks County artists at the 2014 Arts Festival happening at Sand Castle Winery. Admire the beautiful art and meet with the creators behind the vision. The winery will be open for tastings and vineyard tours throughout the duration of the event.

· Through April 13 - Come to the Bristol Riverside Theatre for your last chance to see “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” a side-splitting comedy based on writer Neil Simon’s experience working for the weekly variety show, the Sid Caesar show. Enjoy the hilarious jokes and banter that goes on between the “cast” and the “writers” and get an inside glimpse at the chaos that goes on backstage of a television production.

· April 14-18 – Take a wagon ride down to the “hunting grounds” at Shady Brook Farm for their Easter Eggstravaganza! Grab your basket and search for the candy-filled eggs hidden on the grounds. Children and parents alike can enjoy the wagon rides, inflatable attractions and the chance to meet the Easter Bunny. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to win fabulous Easter baskets and other prizes at this rustic country farm.

· April 17 – Hear the music from “Down Under” with a performance from Australian group Little River Band at New Hope Winery. This great band of vocalists came to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with their combination of good songwriting and beautiful guitar harmonies.

· April 25-May 11 – Power, politics and deception. See all of it during a performance of “Julius Caesar” from the Actors Net of Bucks County. Though the ides of March may have passed, this drama serves as a reminder of the politics of ancient Rome and how relevant the happenings of the past can be today.

· April 26 – Come to Sellersville Theater for an intimate concert with “American Idol” runner-up Bo Bice from the show’s fourth season. Listen as he performs his platinum single “Inside Your Heaven” among other hits. With his diverse vocal abilities that enable him to perform a variety of musical styles, there is sure to be something for everyone at this show.

· April 26-27 – Celebrate the region’s artistic community at the 33rd Annual Shad Festival presented by the Lambertville Area Chamber of Commerce. What once was a small local art exhibition is now a nationally recognized award-winning festival displaying work from the area’s best artists and featuring various forms of entertainment including face painting, live music, a variety of carnival rides and a food court.

· April 27 – Join the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra for their annual Spring Concert happening this month. This event, taking place at the Central Bucks South High School, will feature violinist Nancy Bean, a devoted chamber musician and former Assistant Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

· April 27-May 31 – Explore 245-year-old Serendipity Farm as it sits on nine acres of spectacular landscaped greenery during the Bucks County Designer Houses & Gardens Tour. Admire the charm and history of the countryside from the beautiful views of this farmhouse and experience first-hand how a team of talented designers were able to completely transform the estate into what it is today.
