61st Annual Washington's Crossing Reenactment

On a cold Christmas Night in 1776 General George Washington led troops of the Continental Army in a daring crossing of the Delaware River in Durham boats.

General Washington led approximately 2,400 Continental Army troops, 200 horses and 20 cannons across the river and then marched 10 miles downriver
for a surprise attack on the Hessian troops fighting for the British at the Battle of Trenton.  Over 900 Hessians were captured and 30 were killed. Many historians recognize this Continental Army victory as a significant turning point in the Revolutionary War.

Today's reenactment on a cold Christmas morning was attended by hundreds who watched reenactors from across Pennsylvania and New Jersey recreate the heroic river crossing from 237 years ago.
