Fernando C. Sariego, of Bensalem, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Nov. 27. He was 83.

Born and raised in northern Spain before emigrating to the United States with his family in 1970, Sariego had been a resident of Bensalem since 1973.

He was a talented woodworker who spent the years after his retirement indulging his lifelong passion for wood by carving lifelike leaves and creating unique wood jewelry, birdhouses and jewelry boxes. Prior to becoming a wood artist in his later years, Sariego was employed for 17 years as a machinist at General Machine Products in Trevose.

He enjoyed carpentry and home improvement projects, watching soccer, reading, animals and nature. Sariego also liked spending time with his pet cockatiel, Frosty, creating a haven for birds in his backyard, and keeping the squirrels well supplied with nuts so they wouldn't steal the bird food.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anita; a sister, Rosa, of Spain; two daughters, Rosemary DiStefano and Maria Sariego Sterner; a son-in-law, John Sterner; two grandsons, Ryan (and Nicole) Sariego and Michael DiStefano; a great-granddaughter, Eliana Sariego, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to call from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Tomlinson Funeral Home, 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, where a memorial service will be held immediately following at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sariego's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
