Former Bensalem Public Safety Director Dies

Francis "Frank" P. Friel, of Bensalem, died on Saturday. He was 71.

As noted by Bensalem Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo, Friel was the township's first public safety director, or police chief. Friel served in that role from 1989 to 1997, according to the Bucks County Courier Times.

A former Philadelphia police captain, Friel worked most recently as the director of security for Independence Visitor's Center in Philadelphia.

He was a U.S. Army Reserves veteran and a graduate of St. Joseph's University.

Friel was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Catherine (O'Hagan) Friel. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hoover Friel, children Rosemary Friel, Timothy Friel, Jeffrey Hoover and Melissa Green and her husband Fred and brother Robert Friel. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Eddie, Devin and Westin. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial mass at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Ephrem R.C. Church 5400 Hulmeville Road in Bensalem, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment is private. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Bridge to Healing c/o Alliance Cancer Specialists St. Clare Medical Building 1203 Langhorne-Newtown Road, Suite 135, Langhorne, PA 19047.
