UPDATE: Apartment Fire Displaces Family

At 6:30 a.m., responded to an apartment fire at the complex in the 1500 block of Neshaminy Valley Drive.

According to Battalion Chief Robert Sponheimer, the occupants awoke to the sounds of a smoke alarm and discovered a fire in a bedroom.  The fire extended to the roof of the building and smoke spread to three adjacent apartment units, he said.

According to police, the family of four went onto the balcony and were rescued by police and fire personnel.  

A male occupant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He was treated and released. The family has been moved to another apartment in the complex.

Firefighters from the Newport, Nottingham, Trevose, Penndel, Parkland and William Penn fire companies responded to the scene. The incident was placed under control at 7 a.m.

Sponheimer said the fire was caused by a piece of bedding material, that accidentally came in contact with an electric baseboard heater.
