Robert W. Darnell, of the 600 block of Birch Avenue was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, as well related charges in connection with a July 1 two-vehicle crash that seriously injured another man, according to court documents.
Police said Darnell was traveling north on State Road in the area of the 1600 block while the victim was traveling south on State Road in the same location.
Darnell’s vehicle is said to have crossed over the dividing line markings and made contact with the victim’s car before striking a utility pole and lighted pedestrian sign. Damage to the sign and pole totaled $2,694.81, according to court records.
The victim sustained a shattered right leg, ankle and knee cap as well as a broken left knee cap and head contusion. The victim “underwent extensive medical procedures to reconstruct his leg and has been in a physical therapy facility since the accident," according to court documents.
Following the crash, Darnell was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for a blood test. According to court records, his blood alcohol content was .176 percent, which is more than twice the state's legal limit. He also tested positive for Alprazolam, a schedule IV drug, according to court documents.
Darnell, who remains free on $75,000 unsecured bail, awaits a preliminary hearing later this month.
