County OKs $37M Communications Contract

Cost will be split between county and 54 municipalities.

Moving toward compliance with a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) emergency communications mandate that must be in place by Jan. 1, 2013, the Board of Bucks County Commissioners approved a $37.193 million contract with Motorola Solutions, Inc.

According to a release, the contract, which will provide radio system infrastructure for the project commonly known as “narrow-banding,” met unanimous approval by commissioners during a two-hour, 10-minute business meeting.

On hand to discuss the Motorola contract were representatives of that company and project consultant L.R. Kimball, who believes the approved contract will offer the “very latest technology in public safety communications.”

According to county Emergency Services Director John Dougherty, “this is the best direction to go as far as the overall Emergency Services operation in Bucks County.”

The Motorola contract will not be completely funded by the county, as the county’s 54 municipalities ultimately will wind up sharing a portion of the cost burden.
