County Wills Register Charged with Abusing Power

Grand jury investigation recommended criminal charges for registrar and staffers.

According to a story on PhillyBurbs.com, Bucks County Register of Wills Barbara G. Reilly, 74, of Bensalem, and three administrators from her office forced employees to do off-the-books political work for Republican candidates every election day.

An eight-month grand jury investigation recommended criminal charges against Reilly and her deputies last week, the report stated. The District Attorney filed complaints on Friday.

All four turned themselves in to Bensalem police Friday afternoon. They were arraigned in Buckingham district court.

"All four of the defendants oppressed public employees by forcing them to engage in political work both within and outside of work hours," District Attorney David Heckler said Friday at press conference, according to PhillyBurbs.

According to the Bucks County website, the register of wills acts as clerk of the orphans' court and probates wills and accepts documents necessary to complete the administration of a decedent's estate.
