Gun Buyback Event Postponed Due to Weather

The second gun buyback event that was scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, has been rescheduled for the following week.

With 10 inches of snow possible, the township and police department have decided to postpone the anonymous gun buyback event that was planned for Saturday.

The gun buyback program has been "canceled due to the inclement weather and rescheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2013," said Sgt. Andrew Aninsman of Bensalem's Special Victims Unit.

Though the date has changed, the time remains the same. Anyone interested in turning in guns for cash can do so from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 16.

Handguns, rifles and shotguns will be bought for $50, while semi-automatic handgun's will get $100, and $200 will be given for assault rifles. A person can turn in an unlimited amount of guns, but cash will be given for up to three weapons per person.

The gun buyback event is a voluntary way for people to surrender their firearms with no questions asked, with the goal of reducing gun violence.

Aninsman said that the program is anonymous, in hopes that more people will come forth with unwanted guns.

"We just want to get guns off the street," Aninsman said.

After the collection, the guns will be shipped to a foundry, where they will be melted down and then given to the military, Aninsman explained.

What evidence is there that buying back guns reduces violent crime? How much are taxpayers coughing up to buy these guns?

I have 2 guns that work, but are old, and not worth much. I took them to a gun show, and was offered $25 for each one, by a gun dealer. I will be taking them to this buy-back, and getting twice the money for them. Then I will take the $100, and use it to buy a better gun. Thanks Bensalem Taxpayers!
