Happy Flag Day

It's a day to celebrate the Stars and Stripes.

Residents are encouraged to fly a flag today, which is Flag Day — a day for us to celebrate Old Glory.

Started by a Wisconsin schoolteacher in 1885, Flag Day is still celebrated today in communities across the country.

The June 14 holiday marks the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

The original flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original colonies. The current version still has the original 13 stripes, but now has 50 stars for our 50 states.

Flag Day was officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson by a proclamation in 1916 and later established by an Act of Congress signed by President Harry Truman in 1949.
