Police: Media Coverage Leads to Capture of Burglar, Cigarette Thief

Daniel Haggard was arrested Friday and charged in a string of burglaries in Bensalem, Philadelphia and Lower Southampton.

 

The alleged burglar/cigarette thief that’s been targeting beer stores and other businesses in Bensalem, and Northeast Philly was apprehended this morning.

According to a release, Daniel Haggard, 44, with no fixed address, was arrested this morning after a 7th District Philadelphia police officer observed him getting on a Septa bus.

Bensalem, Philadelphia and Lower Southampton police credit media coverage of the burglaries leading to tips that helped them identify Haggard as the suspect in the surveillance videos. Patch and other local news outlets ran featured several of the videos in recent days.

Detectives attempted to locate Haggard, but found out that he was homeless. Haggard was observed at around 8 a.m. in the area of 5200 block of Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia. Officers converged on the bus and took Haggard into custody. He was carrying a bag was filled with cigarettes that were stolen from a burglary at the CVS at 9800 Bustleton Avenue early this morning.

Prior to his arrest, police found that at around 4 a.m. this morning Haggard broke into the CVS. At around 6 a.m., he stole a van nearby, but later abandoned it.

Haggard is being held in Philadelphia and will be formally charged with at least six burglaries. He is expected to be arraigned at a later time.
