Tree to Honor Heroes Lit in Horsham

Hundreds gather in Horsham to recognize police officers currently serving, as well as those killed in the line of duty.

Police from Bucks and Montgomery counties gathered at the station for the township's Tuesday night.

"Thank [the police] for their service," Horsham Township Council Vice President Greg Nesbitt told the crowd.

Chief County Detective Oscar Vance, who has served in law enforcement for 48 years, told those who gathered that police work is one of the few jobs where "you can save a life, take a life, or give your own life."

The ceremony culminated with the lighting of a large evergreen across the street at .

The tree's blue lights remind the public to remember fallen police officers, while showing support for those who continue to serve, according to Horsham police Chief Robert Ruxton. Project Blue Light has its beginnings during the 1988 holiday season when Dolly Craig began putting blue electric candles in her home's windows in memory of her son-in-law Danny Gleason, a Philadelphia police officer.

Horsham’s tree features close to 1,000 blue bulbs and 26 white bulbs to honor the Montgomery County officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
