Council Denies Low-Income Housing Project

Interfaith Housing group wanted to build nine townhomes near wetlands.

Bensalem Council Monday followed the lead of its Planning Commission denying a zoning change for low-income housing at Bridgewater Road and Bensalem Boulevard.

In January, planners unanimously rejected an application to allow the Interfaith Housing Development Corp. to build nine townhouses on the two-acre property. They said the proposed development, adjacent to Russell C. Struble Elementary School, would be too large for the site, inconsistent with surrounding zoning and would impact wetlands in the area.

According to a story on PhillyBurbs.com, council members had the same issues Monday.

Councilman Tony Belfield pressed Interfaith professionals on the wetlands issue while councilmen Ed Kisselback and Joseph Szafran said council could not rezone the property, the story stated.

"We would essentially be creating our own hardship and then if we don't like the project we're headed to court," Szafran stated, according to PhillyBurbs.
