Traffic Lights to Get Generators for Emergency Power

PennDOT has awarded a $60,000 no-match grant to the township, which will use the money to hook up generators to trafic signals along major arteries in Bensalem.

One of the disruptive side effects of Hurricane Sandy's destructive path through Bensalem was the loss of power to traffic signals along Street Road. Instead of responding to damaged homes or flooded roadways, emergency personnel were deployed to intersections to ensure cars flowed through town.

"We lost pretty much the entire stretch of Street Road," said Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo.

In a move to help prevent a similar situation in the future, the Bensalem Township Council approved Mayor DiGirolamo's proposal to use a $60,000 no-match PennDOT grant to install backup generators on red lights on heavily used Bensalem roads.

"We know for sure that they will be used on Street Road signals," said DiGirolamo. "We're looking at the other major roads, but we have not decided where else to install them. If the power goes out again, these will kick in and keep the signals going."
