Health & Fitness

Getting old sucks, but do you really have to feel that way?

If you feel old then you are old, bottom line! Read about what happened to a man who had the wrong mindset.

I cannot tell you how many times I hear people tell me how old they feel. To me your age is mostly in your mind. As we get older we are wiser and thus better equipped to take care of ourselves. Eat well, sleep well and workout well and you will feel great. How old was Jack LaLanne when he passed away, and how did he keep himself feeling great? How many feats of fitness did he do as he became older?

When you are young your body rebuilds itself faster and you feel a sense of well being and invincibility. When I was 15 years old I worked for my Dad at his bakery. Twelve hours a day 6 days a week. He gave me 24 hours off on Sunday and told me that is all I needed. Work was the best cure for everything according to my Dad. Hey it was not easy working 12 hours a day and going school. My Dad actually told me I only worked half day, the rest I can do what I want with it. So to me this was normal and I did it for 5 years until I got involved in training people for a living.

How do you view things, is your class half full or half empty. How important is your mindset? Here is story that happened that if the right perspective was used could have turned out differently.

Nick Sitzman was a strong, healthy, and ambitious young railroad yardman. He had a reputation as a diligent hard worker and had a living wife and two children and many friends.

One midsummer day, the train crews were informed that they could quit an hour early in honor of the foreman’s birthday. While performing one last check on some of the railroad cars, Nick was accidentally locked in a refrigerator boxcar. When he realized that the rest of the workman had left the site, Nick began to panic.

He banged and shouted until his fists were bloody and his voice was hoarse, but no one heard him. With his knowledge of “the numbers and the facts.” He predicted the temperature to be zero degrees. Nick’s thought was if exactly what had happened to him, Nick found a knife and began to etch words on the wooden floor. He wrote, “It’s so cold, my body is getting numbs, If I could just go to sleep. These may be my last words.”

The next morning, the crew slid open the heavy doors of the boxcar and found Nick dead. An autopsy revealed that every physical sign of his body indicated he had frozen to death. And yet the refrigeration unit of the car was inoperative, and the temperature inside indicated 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Nick had killed himself by the power of his own thoughts.

You, too, if you’re not careful, can kill yourself with your limiting thoughts-not all at once like Nick Sitzman, but little by little, day after day, until you slowly deadened your natural ability to achieve your dream.

In my almost 3 decades of training people I have worked with thousands of people. From Olympic Athletes, to Professional Athletes, to everyday people who want to lose a couple pounds. This week I finished working with a client who lost 24 pounds and total of 16.5 inches off her body in 3 months. My wife who is also a personal trainer with over 20 yrs experience is working with two separate kids both 15 who have gained over 10 pounds of muscle in the last 2 months of working with her. And that is just a sample of what we have done.

I was told when I opened the only private gym in PA that it would not work here. As Bensalem is not the right community for such a place and people will never travel more then 3 to 5 miles to go to a gym not matter how good you are. A private gym should be in the main line or center city. Philadelphia Private Gym has been here since 2000 and I have had people travel over an hour one way to get here.

Bottom line is you feel the way you allow yourself to feel. You are you own creation, so if you feel old then you are old. It is all up to you and only you can change it.
