How do you find a good gym to join?

I have been working in gyms since 1984 and now almost 30 years later I own Philadelphia Private Gym. Finding the right place to workout sometimes take a little work.

So now you know that the best time to get a deal at a gym is in the summer.

Now how do you find a good gym to join?

Well I can give you some tips on that if you like. Here are things I look for when I visit gyms.

Pulling up to parking lot is there a trash can for members to use when they walk out finishing their bottle of water or eating there protein bar to toss into? This is a good indication on what is inside.

Is the parking lot easy to get into and well lit as I may want to workout early in the morning or late in the day and badly lit parking lots are dangerous. Is the parking lot filled, are there enough parking spaces? I do not want to park far away and walk to the gym.

Once inside how does the staff treat me? When I ask to view the gym am I given a tour of the gym or does some sales person first want to ask me questions and try to get me to buy membership before I see what they have to offer? (Sales people at most gyms have a quota and you my friend represent another sale they need to keep their job).

A good place will show you the gym, then sit down with you and answer any questions you may have. Give you paper work on the gym and a simple price break down that you can take home to think about if you need to think about it.

When I do the tour of the gym I will look at the condition of the equipment. Are they all functional or are some down? Are the dumbbells on the rack in order or on the floor? Always go into locker rooms and look at the condition. A good place will have someone who will periodically clean locker room and keep gym floor in order. Why join a gym that has broken equipment of dirty locker rooms. Gyms are communal places, so dirty gyms will have germs.

If there are separate rooms for cardio or free weights, I want to know how is the room monitored and by who? If I am told someone on the other side of the gym has a monitor under the counter and they can periodically check. This is not good enough for me, I do not want to have a problem in a room and no one is there to help me.

When I first started working in gyms the owners were the same people who ran the gym. It is not secret that most gyms are owned by large companies or individuals who wanted something to invest in and like to workout from time to time. I do not like places where there is a manager of the month calling the shots. I want to know who is the owner? Are they at this location? If manager running the gym, how long has he been the manager at this location?

The earlier gym opens the better it is for you. Your body has the highest amount of Testosterone at 4 AM, so reality is the best time to workout is before sunrise. And even though most will not be up doing their workouts before work, many are. And to know your gyms cares is important.

Gyms are a great place to get in shape. This is why they are there, so go find the right one for you and start today. Your gym should be anywhere from 3 to 5 miles away from your house or work. And if you feel shy about going to a gym, check out their web site first to get an idea if it is what you are looking for.

I hope this Blog helped you in your quest to find a gym to workout at. If you have any questions please email me at Pondeli@Pondeli.com . My place although a gym is not a traditional gym in the sense it is a private gym. Meaning you cannot join and workout at your own discretion. I only work doing one on one personal sessions with clients.
