When I started personal training over 28 years ago, there was a hand full of us in the Delaware Valley. Certifications can make a big difference, but what do they all mean?

Spring is in full swing and it is getting warmer and warmer outside. Time to show off that body you promised yourself when you made your New Year’s Resolution. You know, the resolution you made to show off that hot body at the shore? If you didn’t achieve the results you were looking for, then you might be thinking about hiring a personal trainer to help you get back on track.

If you Google “personal trainers”, there seems to be an endless amount of people telling you how great they are and what they can do for you. Times have definitely changed. When I started personal training over 28 years ago, there was a hand full of us in the Delaware Valley. Over the years many personal trainers have come up the ranks. Some are an amazing source of knowledge and have the highest standards on their certifications.

So how can you find a good personal trainer? One way to tell trainers apart is by the organization they are certified by. The ones that are recognized as a higher standard are ACE (American Council on Exercise), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), NASM (National Academy of Sport Medicine), and NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association).

Once a personal trainer is certified, they must take Continuing Education Credits to keep his/her certification current. Companies offer workshops to achieve this. Here at Philadelphia Private Gym (www.philadelphiaprivategym.com)  I have a partnership with ACE to offer these workshops. ACE Integrated Fitness Training Workshop will be here on Saturday May 19 & 20, 2012.

Results are the bottom line in my line of work. I also feel it is important that I help other trainers in the area by offering the ACE workshops. Helping others is the same bottom line I have as the President of the Bensalem Business Association (www.bensalembusiness.com). Parx Casino hosted the first Expo in the association’s third year. As of today, the Bensalem Business Association has influential guest speakers scheduled to speak at every monthly meeting through January 2013 in which the mayor of Bensalem will be speaking.
