Philadelphia's Herb Magee And Tom Shirley Make Up Winningest Active Basketball Coaching Tandem In NCAA

Philadelphia University men's basketball coach Herb Magee and women's basketball coach Tom Shirley are now the winningest active basketball coaching tandem across all NCAA divisions.

PHILADELPHIA (September 14, 2012) – With the recent retirement of University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, Philadelphia University men’s basketball coach Herb Magee and women’s basketball coach Tom Shirley are now the winningest active basketball coaching tandem across all NCAA divisions.

Magee and Shirley have racked up 1,568 victories in their combined 76 years of head coaching experience in the NCAA. 

A 2011 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Magee has amassed 941 wins in 45 seasons at the end of the Rams’ bench to lead all NCAA men’s basketball coaches.

In 31 season, Shirley has a career total of 627 victories—478 at Philadelphia University and 149 in eight years at DeSales.  

The UConn duo of Calhoun and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma combined for 1,677 career victories.  Calhoun won 873 basketball games in his 40-year career—625 at UConn and 248 at Northeastern. In his 27 seasons at UConn, Auriemma has amassed 804 victories.

Magee and Shirley have a 14-win advantage over the next closest duo at the University of North Carolina.  Men’s basketball coach Roy Williams has 675 career wins and women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell earned 879 wins.
