Bensalem Businesses Make Prom Dreams Come True

Golden Asp, Country Bride & Gent and Barbara's Floral Expressions donate prom necessities.

Several local businesses are helping four seniors get to their prom this year.

The is leading the way in the inaugural Community Prom Pride Project by offering two free prom dresses along with accessories and jewelry. is providing two free tuxedo rentals along with shoes, shirts and ties. And is giving the students nosegays and boutonnieres.

The four students -- who were among 23 nominated by their guidance counselors and social workers -- are Danielle Martin, Artina Nimpson, Juan Morales Gonzales and Kristofer Sippel.

"The accomplishments and struggles that each of these students has experienced thus far represents the stories of many of our students. They have all overcome something and are strong in their own way. We are proud of them," said Tammy Wood, supervisor of pupil services, who added that 41 percent of district students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.

The four students will be attending their senior prom May 25 at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Some said they wouldn't have been able to afford prom if it weren't for the project.

"I was so surprised when I found out," said Danielle, whose father recently passed away.

"I thought it was way too much money for one night," said Artina, who lives with her aunt and uncle. "I was shocked and happy. Things like this only happen in the movies."

BHS Principal Bob Anderson lauded the Bensalem businesspeople who made it happen.

"What a great statement of support from our community to our students," he said. "Our community has reached out to help make this evening a very special one for these students. It is such a great feeling that our kids can look around and see our community businesses helping to make this event so positive for them."

Jon Liney, owner of The Golden Asp, said taking part was a no-brainer for him.

"We're a longtime business in Bensalem Township and we're happy to be part of giving back something to the community," he said.

Trish Burkholder, co-owner of Country Bride & Gent, said: "This is our opportunity to give back to the community and to those who have not had the same luxuries that I had as a teenager. I am delighted that we can help be a part of a wonderful memory that these young men will have for the rest of their lives."
