Bensalem Schools Will Mark 9-11 Tragedy

Teachers also will use 'trigger event' as an opportunity to share thoughts, Baugh says

The tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America will not go unnoticed during a busy first week of school in the

Superintendent David Baugh says Friday there will be a district-wide pledge of allegiance and moment of silence at 9:59 a.m., the time the South Tower collapsed in New York City.

“Teachers are encouraged and directed to have a conversation with students at that time as this trigger event has led to our involvement in our two current war actions, which has impacted numerous families and students in Bensalem,” he told Patch in an e-mail.

From a teaching perspective, Dr. Baugh added, there is an aspect to the conversation that is very different at the different grade levels.

“The conversation at the high school is very different from the one at the third-grade level,” he said.

As for how the textbooks being used reflect the 2001 tragedy, Dr. Baugh wrote that there is a bigger picture review going on.

“We are in the process of reviewing our social studies curriculum but the challenge that we are facing and working on this year is that even if a textbook is current when it goes to press, it is probably dated by the time we could get the book," he said. "One of the things we are exploring is thematic learning at the various grade levels to keep our social studies curriculum relevant.”
