Board OKs Softball, Baseball Field Work

Bensalem school district officials said the high school's playing fields will be ready for the start of spring sports.

The Bensalem Township School Board, during its meeting on Wednesday, approved paying Integrated Turf Management Inc. $13,925 to prepare the infield and outfield areas of the junior varsity softball field, varsity softball field and junior varsity baseball field.

"The fields should be very playable," board member Wayne Lewis said. "I think the timeline right now ... will be satisfactory to have them operational this spring."

Work entails scraping off the tops of fields, redressing, aerating throughout the fields and hydra seeding, according to Lewis.

Once complete the fields would comply with PIAA rules, he said.

Board member Kim Rivera voiced concerns about flooding and the installation of drainage to prevent that in the future.

Kenneth L. Medina, the district's director of business operations said drainage would be handled along with the $78 million high school expansion and renovation project.

"We will be addressing it," Medina said. "It’s not going to be addressed as part of this particular proposal."

The short-term game plan is to "try to manage our way around" flooding, should it occur this spring, he said.
