Holy Family Basketball: Women Win; Men Lose

Teams played Post University in Waterbury, Conn.

WATERBURY, Conn. — Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) continues to climb the program’s all-time scoring list as the Holy Family University women’s basketball team defeated Post University, 98-51, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contest in Waterbury, Conn., Saturday afternoon.

Holy Family, ranked 18th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches’ Poll and second in the NCAA Division II East Region Poll, improves to 17-3 overall and 14-1 in the CACC after winning its seventh straight game.  Post is now 7-14 overall and 5-9 in the CACC.

Carr entered today’s game needing only three points to move into second place on the all-time scoring list with Kim Burski who scored 1,821 career points (1995-1999).  With a pair of free throws late in the first half, Carr tied and then surpassed Burski.  Carr finished the game with 19 points and now has 1,837 career points.  She is less than 100 points away from the program record – 91 to be exact.  Debbie Schopfer is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,928 career points.  Schopfer played from 1987-1991.

Sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Holy Family.  Mann shot 7-of-10 from the field and also recorded six rebounds and four blocked shots.  Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil’s) tallied 11 points, while junior Lauren Peters (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and freshman Mary Ellen McCollum (Abington, Pa./St. Basil’s) each contributed ten points.  Peters also dished out five assists.

For Post, freshman Raven Wright-James scored a team-high ten points to lead the Eagles’ offense.  Fellow classmate Jessica Webber chipped in eight points off the bench along with junior Kelli Reynolds who also scored eight points.

The Holy Family defense limited Post to only 16 total field goals and 24.2-percent shooting from the field.  The Tigers also held the advantage on the boards with 51 rebounds compared to 32 by Post.

Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 17 as the Tigers travel to Wilmington University to face the Wildcats in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 6 p.m.

In men’s action, Holy Family dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contest to Post University, 82-57, in Waterbury, Conn., Saturday afternoon.

Holy Family is now 5-18 overall and 3-10 in the CACC, while Post improves to 11-10 overall and 9-4 in the CACC.

Freshman Rashaad Sneed (Durham, N.C./Hillside Heat Academy) led the Holy Family offense with a team-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.  Sneed converted 7-of-8 attempts from the free throw line.  Junior Tim Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) dropped in 15 points, while freshman Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) chipped in ten points.  Freshman Chris Gordy (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench for the Tigers.

For Post, graduate student Cecil Stinson scored a game-high 24 points after draining six three-pointers.  Stinson shot 8-of-16 from the field and was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.  Junior Reginald Holding added 13 points, while shooting a near perfect 6-of-7 from the field.  He also grabbed eight rebounds.  Fellow classmate Geraldo Fernandez contributed 14 points off the bench for the Eagles.

Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 17 as the Tigers travel to Wilmington University to face the Wildcats in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
