Teachers To Get Laptop Computers

District is spending $341,528

By early next month about 250 Bensalem teachers will have new laptop computers.

The district is spending $341,528 from its capital reserve fund for 255 laptops, their software and accessories.

Superintendent Bill Gretzula and Jill Sitnick, supervisor of instructional technology, told Patch on Wednesday that most of the computers will be distributed to secondary teachers because they need them the most.

“We're expanding their mobility,” said Gretzula.

“We have aging technology,” he added.

The laptops will replace desktop computers that are seven years old, Sitnick said.

The district has had 50 laptops for about three years. They have been used by students in classrooms and were paid for with a state grant, Gretzula said.

As a prelude to the distribution, the school board Wednesday approved new policies on the acceptable use of portable computing devices, social networks and communication and information systems.

Among the provisions is that the district can review employee e-mails, employees should be honest about their identity, and that activity can be deemed unacceptable regardless of date, time and location.
