Holy Ghost Prep won the District One Class AAA championship on Saturday defeating Octorara 56-33 at Haverford College. According to PhillyBurbs, it was a defensive gem by the Bensalem-based boys that gave coach Tony Chapman his fifth district championship his 34-year career. "We have been focusing on our defense all year, so we knew that if we were able to slow them down and stop their game, we could build on the lead," said senior guard James Grey told PhillyBurbs. How ‘Bout Those Sixers

This scrappy team has beaten some of the NBA’s best in recent days.

My younger son and I caught a great game on Feb. 1. The Sixers beat reigning MVP Derrick Rose and the Bulls 98-82 thanks to a monster third quarter when they outscored Chicago by 15. Andre Iguodala and Thad Young led Philly’s scorers with 19 a piece. More importantly, they held Mr. Rose to 18 points. My son is 8 years old and it was his first Sixers game. He loved it. He ate Chickie’s & Pete’s Crabfries (just like my older son) and bought a new Sixers snap-back cap with his own money. He was very proud of that. We sat in the lower level for the first half thanks to a friend. The seats were great -- just behind the Bulls bench. In the second half we moved to our seats in the second level, which were also great. The Wells Fargo Center is a …

How 'bout those Sixers! I can finally walk around with my Sixers t-shirts without feeling silly. I'm hoping for a deep playoff run, but that doesn't really seem realistic without a big time superstar like Dwight Howard that can carry the team on his back when matched up against foes like the Heat.   more ›

Lower Moreland Hands Holy Ghost First Loss of the Season

The Lions beat the Firebirds, 50-43, Friday night, ending Holy Ghost's consecutive win streak at 15 to start the season. The Lions now sit in first place in the league standings by a half game.

Throughout the course of a season there are games that teams will circle on the calendar. There are also games in which teams can avenge a previous loss, or use the opponent as a measuring stick to see its own success. Last night's Lower Moreland boys basketball game at Holy Ghost was probably a combination of all three. The Lions marched into Holy Ghost's home gym Friday night facing a Firebirds squad that hadn't lost a single game all season (15-0) and had beaten LM in Lower Moreland by 20 points one month ago to the day. The Lions, however, wouldn't let any thoughts of that previous game creep in their heads as they tried to take a share of first place in the Bicentennial League. Led by Mike Mangan's 17 points and Jeremy Geiger's 15, …

Doors Open for Debut Doubleheader at New Gym

Formal dedication set for Saturday.

The lady Owls on Thursday evening christened the $15 million gym/community center at Bensalem High as they took on Norristown. The boys varsity squad finished up the debut doubleheader tipping off against Holy Ghost. The 45,000 square-foot structure will see its formal dedication at noon Saturday, a ceremony that will include three alumni games. The spacious new digs feature a three-court spectator gym with stands that can seat 1,700 people below an elevated track. In addition to basketball, the gym will be used for wrestling, volleyball, track and classes. It's big enough, district officials have said, for the entire student class of about 1,900 and could even be used for graduation in the event of inclement weather. The project was …
