The Bensalem Township School Board will discuss requests from the historical society and the township country club.

Now that the Neil A. At the Wednesday, April 24 meeting, the board will vote to approve the request from the Bensalem Township Country Club for the donation of the weather vane from the top of the middle school's flag pole. If the request is granted, the weather vane "would be displayed at a place of prominence" at the country club. The Historical Society also hopes to be given several artifacts from the middle school. Cyberbullying, Internet Privacy to be Discussed at Parent Seminar

Bensalem Township School District will host a parent workshop, Raising Healthy Children in the Digital Age.

A Bensalem school psychologist will discuss cyberbullying and Internet privacy issues at a parent workshop on Monday, April 8. Many of the topics that will be discussed stem from the fact that children often lack maturity and have under developed judgment and impulse control, according to Dr. Gail Karafin, the psychologist at Shafer and Snyder Middle Schools. For instance, though Karafin said she doesn't think cyberbullying is a recurring problem in Bensalem schools, it happens because "preteens and teens often lack maturity regarding the cause-and-effect of their words."  "Similar to other forms of aggression, many victims remain silent about electronic bullying out of fear or shame," Karafin said. "Part of the problem is that the bully(s…

Teachers and a group of parents attended the school board meeting to ask that Benjamin Rush Elementary could continue to have the same principal next school year.

Benjamin Rush Elementary school has had three principals this year. At Wednesday night's board meeting, teachers asked if the current principal could stay in the position. Dr. William J. Gretzula is the third principal this year at Benjamin Rush, according to third-grade teacher Lilly Rodriguez. She spoke on behalf of some Spanish-speaking parents who wanted the school board to know how much they respect and appreciate Gretzula and hope that he can remain the principal for the 2013-14 school year. "We would like to have one steady principal. Our children deserve to not feel confused," Rodriguez said, reading from one parent's letter. She presented copies of this letter and other letters from parents to the school board members. At the same…

When Will School Gym Open to Public as Community Center?

The Bensalem Township High School gym, which opened to students in December 2011 was supposed to open to the township as a community center, but has not.

Bensalem Township High School's new gymnasium, which opened for student use in December 2011, was slated to open to the township as a community center in February 2012. More than a year later, the community still has no access to the facility. The 45,000-square-foot facility that features a three-court gym with seating for 1,700 and an elevated track came with a $15 million price tag. Of that, $2 million came from township coffers and another $2 million from a state grant that requires public access during non-school hours as part of an intergovernmental agreement. So when will the gym open to Bensalem residents as a community center? The answer remains unknown. School District President Ralph Douglass told Patch that the district and the …

Tune in to the Just for the Kids Tele-A-Thon

Bensalem Township School District will hold a tele-a-thon on Sunday, March 10 to raise money for the Just for the Kids foundation.

Supplies for science fairs, spelling bee's and other school projects aren't always included in school budgets, so the Just for the Kids foundation raises funds so that these projects can happen. Sunday's Tele-A-Thon will be a 6-hour event where Bensalem Township school teachers and staff will accept pledges that will go directly to the Just for the Kids foundation. The non-profit foundation raises funds that go to innovative and exciting and educational enhancement projects in the classroom, according to President Ralph Douglass, such as author talks, science fairs and more. The tele-a-thon is one of several fundraisers the foundation sponsors. "Any of the funds raised goes into the foundations account and then as the projects get funded, …

School Lane Consolidation Request Rejected by Bensalem, Neshaminy School Boards

Officials from School Lane Charter School sought to merge the Bensalem and Neshaminy schools to create a regional organization.

School Lane Charter School's proposal to merge its Bensalem and Neshaminy programs was denied by Neshaminy School Board Tuesday night. The proposal would have combined both entities into a larger, regional charter school organization. Instead, both entities will remain independent educational facilities. "I did not want to see Neshaminy tax dollars go to another school district, which was a possibility with the merger," said board Vice President Scott Congdon. "I spoke to other board members who were not here tonight, and the feeling was basically the same." Congdon led the meeting in school board President Ritchie Webb's absence. Kim Koutsouradis, William Oettinger and Anthony Sposato were also not present.  The board also instructed …

School District Tele-A-Thon to Raise Funds for Just for the Kids

Bensalem Township School District will hold a tele-a-thon on Sunday, March 10 to raise money for the Just for the Kids foundation.

Sometimes the school district's budget doesn't cover all of the projects a teacher might want to do in the classroom. This is where the Just for the Kids foundation comes in. The non-profit foundation raises funds that go to innovative and exciting and educational enhancement projects in the classroom, according to President Ralph Douglass. The upcoming Tele-A-Thon, held on Sunday, March 10, is one fundraiser that the foundation is sponsoring so that it can fund these projects. "Any of the funds raised goes into the foundations account and then as the projects get funded, the teachers will submit to us receipts and items they've purchased for reimbursement," Douglass explained. The tele-a-thon is an opportunity for all of the schools in …
