Don't Let a Gift Certificate Gather Dust

Got a gift certificate for the holidays? Use it, says the Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection.

Q. I received some wonderful gift certificates during the holiday season from my family. I noticed that none of them expire anytime soon so I am planning a day of pampering and shopping for myself on my birthday in July. Is there any reason that I should not wait and use them sooner? The staff at the Bucks County Consumer Protection office would encourage all of our consumers who received gift certificates, especially over the holiday season, to go out and enjoy them as soon as they are able. Although they may not be nearing their expiration date, there could be an even bigger concern with those gift certificates. Marlin & Ray's Closes its Doors

The Bensalem chain restaurant closed as a result of Ruby Tuesday, Inc.'s decision to make Ruby Tuesday restaurants the "most critical priority" going forward.

The Marlin & Ray's chain, including its Bensalem location, has closed its doors as of Wednesday, Jan. 10, so the company can focus more on its Ruby Tuesday brand, according to a Ruby Tuesday, Inc. earnings call. JJ Buettgen, the president and CEO of Ruby Tuesday Inc. reported a net loss of $15.1 million for the fiscal second quarter, which ended Dec. 4, 2012, and announced the plan to exit Marlin & Ray's, as well as Truffles Grill and Wok Hay concepts. The decision was made so that the company can focus on Ruby Tuesday's sales growth. I don't know how much the employees that actually worked at the restaurant knew... The higher ups had the meeting and then closed the doors of restaurants immediately after. So I'm not sure there was much warning. At any rate—the gift card can be used at any Ruby Tuesday location, so at least you aren't losing your money.   more ›
