Bensalem Community Helps Needy During Holidays

Holiday Heart of a Community effort is collecting clothes, food, toys and gifts for those in need.

  Bensalem Township, local civic groups and businesses are partnering in a special program aimed at helping less fortunate members of the community. “The current economy is difficult for us all, but imagine just how hopeless it may seem to others,” a township release asks. To help with that situation, the township public safety department and school district along with the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs and Building a Better Bensalem Together have rejoined for another Holiday Heart of a Community program. They will be set up at the Neshaminy Mall near the food court where they will accept donations of gently worn coats, boots, scarves and gloves as well as food, toys or gift cards. Dodgeball Teams Needed for Charity Tournament

Throw balls at other people for a good cause.

  Teams are needed to play dodgeball this Saturday for a good cause. The 7th Annual Bensalem Township Dodgeball Tournament is being held on Dec. 1 at the Armstrong Middle School, 2201 Street Road. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and play begins at 9 a.m. The event, sponsored by the township Public Safety Department, benefits underprivileged children in Bensalem. It promises to be a lot of fun. Bensalem People Are More Generous Than Those in Feasterville-Trevose

Taxpayers living in the 19020 zip code gave more to charity than their neighbors in the 19053 zip code.

  Bensalem taxpayers gave 3.6 percent of their income to charity, according to data compiled by “The Chronicle of Philanthopy.”  Based on tax records from the IRS for 2008 – the most recent year for which such data are available – Bensalem residents in the 19020 zip code gave a median contribution of $1,822 to charity on a disposable income of $50,911. In total, Bensalem taxpayers donated $16.4 million. That’s slightly higher than their neighbors in the Feasterville-Trevose 19053 zip code who gave 3.3 percent or $1,775 on an income of $54,237. Bingo’s Foundation to Hold Annual Chinese Auction

Attention cat lovers. Foundation seeks donations for auction baskets.

Bingo’s Foundation, a cat shelter and adoption organization serving the Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia region, is planning its seventh annual Chinese Auction event for Saturday, March 24. It will be held at the Bucks County Technical High School, 610 Wistar Road, Fairless Hills. Doors open at 5 p.m. and drawings from 7-10 p.m. “This event has been one of our most successful fundraisers and most enjoyable family event,” said Eleanor Shaknitz of Bingo’s Auction Committee. Young Bensalem girl is fighting Leukemia.

  Phightin4Sophia is a charitable organization set up to assist in the care of 5-year-old Sophia Pasquarella, of Bensalem, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in May 2011. Sophia's parents, Peter and Kimberly, also have two younger children. Four-year-old Giuliana and two-year-old Peter III. As Sophia receives extensive Chemotherapy to battle and cure her Cancer, many expenses have put a financial burden on this young family. Their goal is to raise money through fundraising and donations to help relieve this pressure so that Pete and Kim may be by Sophia's bedside at all times. They also wish to show them that "NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!" Sophia also wants to be a YouTube sensation. You can like her video online.

'Like' Dunkin' Donuts and Help Fight Hunger

Dunkin' Donuts of Greater Philadelphia will donate $1 to Philabundance for every Facebook "like" it gets from now until Dec. 31.

State Offers Tips for Charitable Holiday Giving

Residents should do some research before giving to charity.

  Pennsylvanians considering making charitable donations for the holidays should first do some research about the causes or groups that they wish to support, according to Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele. “There are many worthy charities and residents should feel free to contribute to causes that mean something to them,” said Aichele, whose department oversees charities in the state. “However, scam artists are also out there and ready to prey on Pennsylvanians’ generosity, particularly during the holiday season.” According to a release, most charities are legitimate and use the majority of their money for worthwhile projects, but some may misrepresent their cause or spend a high percentage of donations on administrative and …

Dodgeball Event to Help Needy Children

Public Safety Department still looking for teams.

  On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Bensalem Public Safety Department will hold its 6th annual Dodgeball Tournament. The event benefits under privileged children in Bensalem. It will be held in the old Armstrong Middle School at 2201 Street Road starting at 9 a.m. Admission to the event will be one new toy per player or spectator. Registration is limited to the first 32 teams, but the township is still looking for more participants, according to Public Safety Director Fred Harran. The cost of registration is $25 per team if paid before the event or $35 at the door. An award will be presented to the first place team. Help Feed Those in Need This Holiday Season

Many people throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties are struggling to get by. Practice charity by donating to a local food pantry or shelter.

As the holiday season approaches, it's good to remember the less fortunate and those in need of assistance, in addition to friends and family. If donating to a local food pantry or shelter wasn't an option for Thanksgiving, try and practice giving as the winter holidays near. Communities throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties continue to see an increase in the number of families who need assistance in accessing food. I couldn't agree more...let's help locally with our food drives. Class-Harlan Real Estate is sponsering a Food Drive to benefit the New Britain Food Pantry starting now and ending Dec 20th.
